CD 28 Trawler Questions

Post by Burt Polishook »

Q1:Recently, my CD 28 trawler seems to be running a little hot. Normally I can run it up to 195 degrees at about 3700 RM on the Volvo 200 TAMD41A. Lately, it starts going over that temperature at 2700 rpm and keeps going up as rpm increases. I have put in a new impeller, cleaned the raw water filter and scrapped the raw water scupper intake. I don't think that the bottom is heavily covered with growth but I am having it scrapped.Anybody have any other ideas that I should pursue?

Q2:Has anybody changed the muffler on a CD 28 or larger power boat? The exhaust really make lots of noise and I wonder if any of the new mufflers might quiet things down. I have put a lot new acoustic material in the engine area and that has helped, but the exhaust noise at the stern is still quite loud.

Burt I have a TMD41B 165HP on my 28 and she runs at 165Degrees. I would suggest checking the riser or the manifold.

Paul,
Thanks for the input. I spoke to someone today who has dual TAMD41s on a fishing boat. His engines run normally at 195 degrees. However, about every 4 to 5 years of normal running, he too experienced the same problem I currently have. Both times it was solved by cleaning the inside of the heat exchanger. Apparently all kinds of crud forms inside and sticks to the wall. The ends of the heat exhanger are taken off and the remaining cylinder is boiled in a liquid to remove the crud. He mentioned the riser and manifold but thought they might be secondary problems.
