Is there any rule of thumb concerning the size of the backing plate relative to the size of the object being mounted to the deck/hull? The ones on Spanish Eyes appear to be about the same size as the piece they're backing up, but I was wondering if there was any "rules" to go by. Thanks in advance for your information.

I Just Installed a Boarding Ladder
I just installed a boarding ladder made by the CD OEM, Ocean Engineering. EXCELLENT LADDER!!!! $250.00
The backing plate was the identical size as the outside mounting plate. I'm not an expert, but I would say that a rule of thumb would be that the backing plate should be no smaller than the fitting it's connected to; available space will limit how large you go. Use the other boat fittings as a guide.
