Typhoon Weekender

Post by Mike Johnson »

I'm looking at purchasing a 78 Typhoon Weekender. Despite some obvious neglect she appears to be in good shape. The owner is asking $4500 for her and I think she would take $4000.

Is this a good price for this boat?

In my area (NJ), I'd expect a Typhoon between $4000 and $5000 to be mint with a fairly new motor and excellent sails. Mine is priced at $3750, sails are good and the motor is an 84. I assume you must have seen my post a few places below yours and NJ is hardly convenient for you.

Typhoons can be had even cheaper, but these boats have some age on them and, if neglected, can be prone to rudder delamination, deck deterioration from leakage around the fittings into the core, and cracks in the deck at the base of the mast if a former owner was overzealous in tightening rigging, etc., etc., etc. Read through the message board for the common problems and solutions, maybe the archives too.

The Typhoon is a great boat and well worth the money and the searching: just be sure to get a good one. Spend the money on a good boat, not on repairing a fixer-upper, cosmetics aside of course.

Good luck!

What comes with the weekender? Paid $4900 for my 77. It came with main, jib & jenny, all in fair shape. New Mariner 5 HP. with tank. All cousions, portable head, pulpits fore & aft with life lines, new bottom paint and a custom trailer in good shape. You can use this info as a waterline mark.

I paid $2000 for my 76 weekender last fall. With trailer and '88 outboard, original sails. The owner originally asked for $4500 but it was sadly neglected, as in pulled out of the water and left for several years. My brother has a mint weekender he paid $4400 three years ago. It had new sails, motor and racing gear. We are in Minnesota, so our boats our freshwater. Though people say freshwater boats cost more the asking price seems to be the same. Condition, sails, motor and trailer seem to be the main factors. I think $4000-$5000 should purchase a good condition typhoon with trailer, good sails and outboard. I believe it is worth putting time and money into the boats if you are willing.

I have a well maintained 1975 typhoon in S.E. Michigan that I am asking $3500.00 for,$4000.00 for a 3 year newer boat sounds resonable. E-mail me for details if you are interested.
