Boating school

Post by Mel V »

Sorry to ask but I have a friend who wants to learn how to handle a power boat. Can any one recommend a school, she would prefer a ladies only school and Florida would be ideal?

Hello Mel:

I would recommend the Castle Harbor Boating School in Coral Gables, Florida. They are located at Matheson Hammock Park on Biscayne Bay. Their website is http://www.castleharbor.com

They are also an active sailing school. In the interest of full disclosure, it is where I go sailing/racing most Saturdays-weather permitting.

The school is co-educational. Over the past 2-3 years I have observed their classes -both powerboats and learn to sail classes. Their instructors are knowledgeable and seem genuinely interested in the students. The classes are always very small, just 2-3 students, sometimes 4 students.

The other big advantage is the weather. Putting aside for now the unbearably cold weather of the past few days, weather in South Florida in February and March is generally 78-80 for the highs, and 65-67 for the lows. Gentle winds, very little rain. Chamber of Commerce weather.

As for the current weather, can anyone volunteer to send extra blankets :?: Last night it went down to 33 degrees :!: :!: :!: Tonight it is going down to 40 degrees :!: :!: :!:

I am not sure why we are being punished, but I know we ARE being punished.

Fair Winds,
Fair winds,

Robert

My 1st question

When I go to my reward the 1st question I'll ask is " 'The rain falls on the just and the unjust' - what's that all about?"

Boating Class

Post by Ed Haley »

There should be a lot of US Power Squadron boating classes starting up now. These are group classes that are pretty good in offering the Rules of the Road and basic seamanship. They're held once a week in a squadron near you. They also have a many other courses that follow your skill development in boating such as Weather, Piloting, Advanced Piloting and Navigation.

The classes are usually during the winter and spring. There's a lot of fun in these classes talking about boating when you may not get the chance to be on the water. Plus you'll meet a lot of new friends.

Check it out.

I heard the explananation years ago. Sorry I can't remember the attribution, but here's your answer:

The rain it falls upon the just
and on the unjust feller,
But mostly on the just because
the unjust stole the just's umbrella

Hi Mel,

I would go with Sea Sense. Not only do they provide both sail and powerboat training, they are run by women for women. They'll also train you on your own boat if that's what you want.

Rain On The Just And The Unjust

SeaBelle,

Linus, in the Charlie Brown comic by Charles Shultz, used to use that quote quite often. It was probably an excerpt from Matt. 5:45.

I like John V's rendition. :D
