What is Under Typhoon Chain Plates?

Post by John Halporn »

My early 1968 Typhoon #28 has plywood blocks cemented against the hull flange as anchors for the shroud chain plate tangs. I have seen later models with through bolted bronze and stainless deck fittings for the shrouds. Those of you with newer typhoons, what does the backing plate look like underneath? is it just under the hull flange, or is it glassed to the side of the hull? I am thinking of buying the deck fitting from Spartan and making the backing plate. Thanks

The 1982 Typhoon chainplates are bolted through the deck and hull flanges. As far as I can tell from the diagram in the manual, and from feeling through the inspection port, there is some metal reinforcement that is glassed to the underside of the hull flange. Then stainless washers and locknuts.
