Finally an uploaded video
Hi all,
I finally got to upload one video.
I am checking with my website host because they will not allow a .M
OV format on their server for some reason???
Anyway I did upload here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94nggcasg1k
Hope you enjoy,
Fred

One more video
Hi all,
I sorted things out with my web hosting service. Turns out I can upload .MOV files but must use an FTP program to do so.
No problem.
So here is one more video. It takes an hour & 15 minutes to upload one of these 28MB files, so I have to find a much faster connection before I upload anymore.
So REMEMBER, a 1minute 40 sec video is a huge file. It would be best if you have cable or DSL to view it.

Terrific video! I love the commentary to go with it, something us sailing geeks love.
You got me thinking I should buy a video camera now! How did you manage such decent voice quality with the wind blowing 20 knots?

Fred,
wonderful videos, thank you for going to the trouble. I agree with Russell: the commentary on the rig is very interesting for us geeks.

Answer to Russell
Hi Russell,
The camera I used is a Kodak Easy Share 7530. This a digital camera with the ability to take videos. With the standard amount of memory it will take up to a 2 minute video on the high quality setting.
As for how I managed. After so many months sailing my body is pretty well adapted to the motion so I just point and shoot. Maybe I'm a natural cameraman
Take care,
Fred

Hi Fred,
Both are great videos. Thanks for giving the winter bound group a 'fix'.
On the latest video in addition to the wind vane you have a small 3 part block and tackle attached to the port side of the tiller and the port side pushpit rail / lifeline. It looks like it minimizes the boats swing to port from the wind vane input??
How did the rudder post get so high?
Enjoy your sail

Answer to Leo
Hi Leo,
You are right. There is a small tackle attached to the tiller. On the tiller end there is also a piece of rubber. What is it for?
Under most conditions sailboats will normally round up to windward. When the windvane provides correction to windward the elastic slows this response and helps to keep the boat from coming too far and too fast up into the wind.
I set the tackle so the tiller is just about amidships. The wind vane can steer away from the wind with no restriction. I use the small tackle not for the mechanical advantage but for very fine incremental control.
As for the rudder location, go here for an explanation:

Fenixrises video
Fred,
I really enjoyed viewing your uploaded video. I wish I could view the other video clips you have posted to http://www.sbastro.com/FeNIX/Videos.htm
However, all the other clips other than "Fiji to New Zealand Part 3" I get a broken link icon. Since you have been pretty much engaged while single handed sailing, during this planned three month respite will you have a chance to explore the problem? Or am I the only one having trouble viewing the clips?

Answer to Mike
Hi Mike,
The is no problem. The other videos are not yet uploaded. I need to find a very high capacity provider here in NewZealand. It took about 75 minutes to upload that one video, much too slow. I have about one gigabyte of video files to upload and will do that when
I find a good fast connection here in Whangarei.
Take care,
Fred

More Videos
Hi all,
Spent about 3 hours today uploading some more video. There are now about 35% of the total on my server.
I think all the links on the video page of the Fenix website are working correctly.
http://www.sbastro.com/FeNIX/mainFrameSet.htm
I will upload more as time allows and let you know.
Take care,
Fred

GM Fred,
I enjoyed your video but it made me sea sick. That is a problem us shallow water sailors have.
How many kts. were you making when that was shot?
Have a great day!

Try tilting the screen back and forth and back and forth and back and forth so that the horizon stays level and the boat rocks back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and back and forth.Tom Tucker wrote:I enjoyed your video but it made me sea sick.

Hi Tom,
Most of the videos are made when the boat was making 4 - 6.5 knots.
Take care,
Fred
