Proud new CD 25 Owner

Post by Steve Bryant »

Ahoy,

I am the proud new owner of a 1981 Cape Dory 25, Hull #815. Elan spent her entire life on Lake Michigan, and then she reached out to find her way south to reside in the Gulf of Mexico on the beautifully devastated Mississippi Gulf Coast.

I have been in love with Cape Dory sailing vessels for quite some time, and I have been following this board for the last six or seven months, which finally lead me to finding Elan for sale on this website. I am not new to sailing in these waters. My previous sailboat was an Endeavour 32 that I cruised and raced here on the Gulf for ten years. I reluctantly had to sell her when my daughter was born. My daughter is now eight, and we are together going to learn to experience the joys of sailing again.

Even with the wealth of knowlege that these archives have to offer, I have a lot of questions about my boat. I will be asking a lot of those questions as we get her ready for her christening into the southern, salty life. Your experience and insights regarding this vessel would be most appreciated.

My first request, is that anyone that would be kind enough to share a copy of Mr. Didereaux's CD on the CD 25 that was making its rounds a few months ago, it would be most appreciated. I will be more than happy to send anyone a SASE along with a blank CD in order to obtain a copy. Please PM me if you are willing to help me out with that.

Even though I have only been visiting this board for the past six or seven months, I really feel like I have known all of you for a long time. Glad you are back home OJ. I look forward to becoming a part of the Cape Dory family.

Thanks,

Congratulations on your CD25. I'm sure you will love it as much as the rest of us.

I too would very much like a copy of that CD that was floating around. Tell me where to send my stuff.

Thanks!

Congratulations on your new boat. Is she already in the water and ready to sail? I assume you are able to sail year-round.

Eight is a perfect age to learn to sail. Have a great time with your two girls.

Thanks Bly & Henry,

She will be launched over Thanksgiving, and yes we can enjoy her year round. Eight is a great age to learn. Especially since she is the only one in the family that enjoys standing headroom.

Steve,

Congratulations on your new CD25.

The CD25 was on my short list but I ended up with a CD22. I'm sure you'll have a great time with it.

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the Cape Dory family. Careful, it's contagious! I too started with a CD25. They sail wonderfully. And I spent some time in Mississippi when I was younger. Best wishes, and I hope you will be affiliated with the Gulf Coast Fleet when you join CDSOA, Inc.

Steve - Welcome aboard! There is something about CD25s and kids that I'm sure you'll find works very well. I think it's called magic!

Steve,

I also read the board for 6 months before buying about 5 years ago. That exercise proved very helpful.

You should try and get a copy of the Good Old Boat magazine which featured Carter Brey's CD 25.

I will look forward to reading your posts in the future. We all learn when questions are asked so don't be bashful.

Thank you all for the welcome,

Gary M, I appreciate your reply. Marina del Rey must a beautiful place to call home. One of your neighbors to the north, the city of Sausalito, adopted Ocean Springs, MS as a sister city after Hurricane Katrina. We have an eclectic art community here and the volunteers that came from California were a godsend.

Chuck, I look forward to meeting you and becoming a member of the Gulf Coast Fleet. When Troy Scott gets his boat in the water down here, maybe we can host a get together.

John Ring, your Sovereign website was one of the first things I discovered when I found this board. Your pictorial history of the 25 led me to find a later model with the bronze ports, and the upgrades you made to her are inspiring. Thank you also for the kids pics. I showed them to my daughter and she is getting excited.

Dick, I have a great deal of questions, so I won't be bashful. It's funny you should mention the Good Old Boat article about Carter's "Mary Ellen". It was that particular article and John Vigor's book that inspired me to start looking for a CD25. To find them both active participants on this board was "lagniappe", as we say down here.

Robert (Sea Hunt), your boat is out there. She will call to you, and when she does, go get her. That's what happened to me.

Thanks again,
Steve Bryant

That was back in the good days, Henry-- before it sank and became a zebra mussel bordello.
