Hello everybody there is a 1084 Cape Dory 28 for sale in California for $35,000.00, I think this is high for this boat. The broker says the seller is not negotiable. The boat has been on the market for two months on yachtworld. I would like other peoples opinion regarding this boat in Long Beach Ca.

It's worth what a buyer is willing to pay and what the seller is willing to let it go for. West Coast Cape Dorys seem to sell for more than they do on the East Coast. They are not as plentiful and shipping one out is not cheap. 1984 is a fairly late model. The owner may be some what reluctant to sell but if he gets enough then so be it. Every boat is for sale, it just depends on how high the offer is. Condition is everything. If this boat is in excellent condition, very well equipped and includes a bunch of extra gear it could be a bargin. It is not hard to add thousands of dollars worth of gear to any given boat. If this is the set up you are looking for it may be well worth it. At a glance it seems a little high for a 28 but then I haven't seen this boat. I am sure you could find a cheaper CD-28 at some time, some place, maybe older or newer in better or worse condition. The question is weather this boat is worth this much to you? It is a good deal if you get what you pay for, Steve.

Without knowing what condition the boat's in, how well the mechanical systems have been maintained or what electronics and other goodies will be included in the sale of the boat, it's hard for anyone to really make a qualified assessment. But depending on those things you'll find CD28 sailboats on the market with prices ranging from $19,000 to over $40,000 -- but I doubt anyone's willing to pay much over $30,000 for an old CD28.

Steve and Cathy's advice and info is right on. An older boat is worth whatever a knowledgeable person is willing to pay for it and stay happy. That being said, I once shopped extensively for Cape Dorys about 6 years ago and looked at the most perfect, 1985 CD28 I had ever seen or seen since...original owner selling because of illness. He was asking 33K and sold the boat quickly for 30K, before I could sell mine and get back and buy it It's all about condition and things like engine hours, but the later CDs did tend to have a bit higher level of finish. Fortunately, Cape Dory built a huge number of boats, and most are still sailing, so they are readily available....looking at many and patience, then being ready with a deposit when you find the right one (you'll know it) are important. And of course, the survey. Cannot speak to West Coast boats, but most are still in the east.

Sounds like it is a little high unless it's absolutely Bristol and loaded with accessories, but not completely unreasonable, especially, as it's in California, where Cape Dories do sell for more.
