1980 CapeDory 25 Water floods boat when running in heavy sea

Post by Zeida Cecilia-Mendez »

Most recent experience: Waves 4 - 6 feet, exhilarating surfing downwind. Boat stays totally dry on board. Everything seems to be under control. After a while, water starts sipping thru floor boards and floods everything. The bilge is totally overflowing. I pump it, and get it all out, then everything's fine! Where is that water coming in from? This is the second time it has happened to me. Both times while running downwind. The cockpit locker where the bilge pump is located shows signs of water that has run from under the lazarette, thru the locker and into the bilge. But there's no problem with the one and only thru-hull (that of the bilge pump) in the back of the boat, no crack on the hull..so where and how is this water getting into the boat? if anyone has experienced anything similar, I would like to know. The first time, it was very scary. The second time, I just pumped the water out, and kept pumping until we arrived at the marina. !!!??? Help will be appreciated.
Zeida.

Hi Zeida,

If I had to guess....I would say that the water is coming in backward....thru your bilge pump. If you have a check valve, this could be leaking. If you do not...you probably need one or need to close the thru hull under such conditions if equipped with a valve.
Can I guess that your thru hull is on the stern of the boat?
