CD 36: No boom vang ?

Post by Thinking about Cape Dory »

I notice that the CD 36 standardly is rigged without a boomvang, and indeed, that the mainsheet runs back to the mast, which would impede using a boomvang. I am not familiar with this sheeting arrangement, and have to ask a dumb question: How do you keep the boom down and sail flat on a broad reach?

40 is the same way. I use a strap around the boom and a block and tackle arrangement. Clip it to a stanchion base when reaching or running. clip it to the front of the boom when not is use. it is up and out of the way. Not as high tech as the elegant hydraulic vangs the racing boats use but it has served well for many years.

The CD-30 also was rigged standard without a vang. The mainsheet however, does not go forward to the mast, probably because the 30 has a cabin top mounted traveler. To add a vang to Hanalei, I first mounted a "U" bolt to the base of the mast, just high enough to clear the mast step casting that is mounted to the cabin roof(maybe 2 1/2 to 3" up the mast). This "U" bolt is Stainless steel with stainless backing plate and double nutted inside the mast. Don't try drilling and tapping an eye bolt to the mast instead of the "U" bolt. The vang can exert a lot of force on that fitting and an eye bolt will pull through the mast! As far as connecting the vang to the boom, I too used a boom strap. It works well, is adjustable, and does not require drilling the boom for a boom bail, although a boom bail is another alternative. The vang I use came with a snap shackle at the mast end, it makes moving the vang to a stanchion base for use as a preventer very easy, if one is concerned about an inadvertant jibe. All in all, it works well, and definately flattens the main when you need to do it.

You can still set up a boom vang with the mainsheet running forward to the boom.

On our CD32 an additional boom bail was placed forward of the three boom bails for the mainsheet blocks. They are approximately equidistant. There is also a mast bail at the base of the mast. I've got a rather large snap hook attached to the boom bail and attach the boom vang to the snap hook on the boom bail and the other end directly to the mast bail. The mainsheet, where it runs down the mast, runs slighly to port of the mast, so it is out of the way of the vang. The snap hook lowers the shackle for the vang so that it is below the mainsheet. We've haven't had any problem with this arrangement.

I forgot to mention that we use a block and tackle boom vang, not a rigid one.
