CD30 Slow drain

Post by JD Johnson »

I would like to install a shower in my CD30 but am concerned about how slow the compartment in the sole drains. It only has one small 1/4" drain hole. I'm not sure about drilling more in this area, since the liner is glassed to the hull here. I'm not even sure it would help, when I force water through with a hose it drained fine but it rushes back in as soon as the pressure is gone. Did CD's that came with showers have a different configuration? Has anyone made any changes to improve drainage in this area?
Thanks for the help.

I did put a shower in our CD 28 a few years ago. I drilled that hole out to accept a 1/2" male threaded pvc adaptor with a hose barb. I attached some 1/2"(maybe it was 3/4", bigger would be better) and ran ir down to the bilge. I intended to run it and the icebox to a shower drain pump. I never did so it drains into the bilge. We don't use the inside shower much as we also have a cockpit shower conected to the hot water tank which we are more inclined to use. However, when you need the inside shower it is welcome and we clean the bilge regularly so it's not a problem. The drain has a tendancy to clog at the fitting. We clean it at the pan so debris doesn't flow much to the bilge.
We replaced the sole board with a grate I made to fit. The valve is mounted to the sliding sink over the head. We still have a hand pump as well, if we are cruising, our tankage is only about 45 gallons, we use the hand pump. But weekends we use the shower(in the cockpit mostly).

The bigger the hole and faster the flow. I can not imagine being able to scuttle a vessel by enlarging this drain. The keel forefoot is forward of the mast step. At the shower drain, the keel should already have substantial "deadwood". Drill away! Capt.Mike

We also have a CD30. I have 3 plastic hoses that run to a pump located in the engine compartment. When the pump is operated it pumps the water over the side. The water does not flow into the bilge. One of the hoses 1/2" goes directly from the shower drain to the pump and is in use when the shower is in use. The other hose goes from the fridge drain to the pump and is used to drain the box. The third is a hose from the bottom aft end of the bilge and is used to pump the bilge. I have a Y valve before the pump so two of the three hoses are always connected and one of them being the bilge pump. So, no waste water ever resides in my bilge. The only water down there is from the mast head and the opening in my windlass, obviously, no smelly bilge. I have a strainer in front of the pump. I have the B version and the head is where the V berth is on most boats. All water is pumped out via the bilge exhaust located on the port quarter. The hand bilge pump is always available as originally installed. Buena suerte...Marv Birdt CRYSTAL CD 30B Hull # 358

JD,
I also have a grate in the sole of my CD30 to provide for shower drainage. It's amidships between the bulkheads, with the head to port and the basin to starboard. I have a sheet of rubber salvaged from an inflatable which unrolls to create a shower "curtain", and rolls back up to stow against one corner of the bulkhead. I'd just as soon shower in the cockpit, but sometimes it's nice to have privacy, and this arrangement works fairly well if you can manage the narrow shower stall space. It drains to the bilges, so keeping it clean is important to deter soap scum build-up or odor. Feel free to have a look if you like. I'll be at either the Float-in, Rendezvous, or hopefully both. No e-mail address of my own yet, just mooching off those less web-challenged than myself. Matt Pohlhammer S.V. KAIGAI
