Intrepid 9M

Post by Ron »

John, I have been trying to get in touch with you but can not via the email you listed as below. I have no information to offer and have asked for information of others on the bulletin board previously but got no response. I too am curious and want to get some comparisons of CD28-CD30 and the Intrepid 9M. I know some of the quoted differences but would like to get the scoop from these contributing experts and wonder if this is the "ugly sister" of the Cape Dory.

Give me a response and lets see if we can together get more info before we make the investment.

Thanks, Ron

Hi All
Found this site sort of by accident, but am glad I did. I searched on some posts fot the Intrepid 9M and got some info. Am looking for a first sailboat. My wife is a little leery of boats that sail on their ear, and a couple posts suggest the Intrepid is that way. Any information? We will be in Puget Sound, mostly day sailing and some overnighting. There is an Intrepid 9M for sale here under 20K and I'm very interested due to the Cape Dory association. Any information, help, suggestions, warnings, etc. would certainly be appreciated. Thanks.

John

I purchased a 1978 Intrepid 28 last year. I have enjoyed it very much. No, it is not the ugly step sister of Cape dory. In fact, it is a good alternative to high teak maintenance. It has teak toe rail and grab rails only. The cabin layout and deck was much superior to many other boats in the size class. The 28 has 5 berths, separate head compartment, cabin sole is fiberglass with teak boards over keel bolt bilge.
I don't feel that the boat heels any more than any other light fin keel boat (7500 lb). I sail mailnly in Tampa Bay , sheltered but large body of water with changing weather and lot of very large commercial traffic. If you get a chance, go out on a sea trial. they are very responsive boats.
I am in the process of slowly upgrading mostly original equipment. The only thing I have found that a true Cape Dory doesn't have is opening plastic ports. But I have seen some older CD25's with plastic ports. The original owners manual is pretty basic but it is for the Intrepid 28 and the 9M. The 9M looks like a good workable design.
Not many of the Intrepids seem to have been built. I'm not sure why. They are nice sailors.
I would like to hear more about other Intrepid owners.
Paul
