Does anyone have any information or comments on the sailing characteristics of a CD32 (sloop rigged)?

I've got a sloop-rigged CD33 and she sails great. I looked at one nice CD32 when shopping. I'd bet they sail quite well.

Ryan,

We own a CD32 but she is cutter rigged. She is a wonderful sailor and we love her. I'd guess that the sloop would be able to point higher than the cutter making her more efficient upwind.

Why can sloops point higher?

Post by Ryan Turner »

Catherine suggests that sloops might be able to point higher than cutters. It seems that I've heard this before but I've never understood why it might be the case. Can anyone shed any light?

The front sail backwinds the sail behind when going upwind. In a sloop, the jib is sheeted approx. 10 deg. relative to bow/stern line.
The main is sheeted midships for 10 deg. between jib and main. Each additional foresail needs an additional 10 deg. if overlapped.
