Drifter for Cd25

Post by Bob Flayhart »

I am interested in purchasing a drifter for my CD25. Are there very many of you who have purchased this type of sail? I would like to know how you like them & from what sailmaker you made the purchase. I sail in the Chesapeake.

Bob,

Hanalei (CD-30) came with an asymetrical spinaker. I think some call it a "Cruising Spinaker", "Drifter Reacher", etc. On Hanalei, I call it the "RBT", for Really Big Thing and it scares the H@#% out of the First Mate in anything over 15 knot winds. I find it is an excellent forsail for off the wind work in light airs. It's area is twice what the area of the main is, so with it flying you have tripled the sail area, not including the stays'l. I guess it all depends on what you are going to do with it. There are a lot of ideas on this site about how it should be rigged, but I have it with one sheet, a fixed tack, and I raise it in rubber band stops. To take it down, I release the tack, slowly ease the halyard while the mate gathers her in at the rail from the cockpit. In short, for cruising, or a long tack, it is a great sail and well worth adding to your inventory.
