windvane self steerer installation

Post by john churchill »

i have just bought a used aries wind vane for my cd26. does anyone have any advice about installing this thing. it does not have the brackets for it. the company wants $240 for the 4 brackets, which seems steep to me, but they are in scandanavia now where costs are high i believe. i was planning to have brackets made locally in a machine shop. any advice on this? how about anyone with the brackets that can make me a diagramor a photo? anyone with another boat in their marina that has one? thanks for your help as i plunge into another small project that i am sure will be quick, simple and easy.

ASk them to send you a catalog. It is detailed and shows the mounting hardware and gives the specifications. And if you crewed on Evening Star in May you would be able to learn it in's and out's real quickly... Good luck.

It's hard to look a gift horse in the mouth. Breeze, a CD 22D, sports a Navik windvane. It works like a miracle, a blessing from above. If your not familiar with the Navik, it may offer you another option. The problem with Aries is finding and getting parts. Most major parts are casted alloy then machined. This type of fabrication is the most difficult and expensive. The Navik is all stainless still except for one casting. The navik is light and attractive on the vessel. I can not say enough complements about how the Navik has performed for me and influenced how I sail. The Navik has made me a better sailor by breaking the chain on the tiller and allowing me to tune the sails and balance the rig, that gives Breeze a life of her own. What do you do next when another piece breaks? : ASk them to send you a catalog. It is detailed and shows the mounting hardware and gives the specifications. And if you crewed on Evening Star in May you would be able to learn it in's and out's real quickly... Good luck.
