3-blade prop for CD 28

Post by Paul Grecay »

I am getting ready to launch my CD 28 (1976). She has a 24 HP volvo Penta and is currently fitted with a 2-blade Michigan Wheel prop. I would like to replace this with a 3-blade to increase stopping power etc. Does anyone have any information on whether a 3 blade will actually improve handling under power. What should I look for in a 3-blade prop...(pitch etc.) I am assuming that there must be someone out there with a CD 28 with a 24 HP diesel. Also, are there any suggestions on where one may be purchased (I am wondering if a used prop might do....). Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Hey Paul,

I have a 13 hp with twin blade prop... it will stop the boat but there isn't a lot of
ability to maneuver in reverse.

Paul,

I have a 28 with a MD7B I think that it is 18 horsepower. The three blade 14x16 works well under power, but I can't help but feel that it costs boat speed in light air.

Mike,

I took a look at some CD 28s in the yard and those which have three blade props seem to have 14 dia. x 14 pitch. And most are equipped with smaller engines than mine. I am thinking that my 24hp ought to be able to handle a 14 pitch three blade (it presently has a 14 pitch 2 blade). I live near the upper chesapeake and my boat is in Kent Island...there ought to be some good prop shops nearby. I'm hoping to get one used and save a few dollars. Thanks.
