Flotilla to Onset rendezvous

Re: Flotilla to Onset rendezvous
Catherine,
Hanalei and crew will probably not make it to Onset in July, work commitments etc., but we are located at the Noank Shipyard right at the mouth of the Mystic River that might make a good overnight stop for you all sailing in from the West. I'm going to contact the shipyard and see if they can provide transient moorings for CDs on the move and how much they would charge. I know that last season they seemed to have quite a few open moorings, so, it is possible. It's going to take you a while to get to Onset from NJ. I figure it's roughly 2 days from Noank to Onset, probably with a stop at Newport, or Block Island(Block is about 3-4 hours from Mystic). Last year Carol and I tried for Kuttyhunk twice and ended up fogged in at Block Island each time. If you get the tides right, it can help with an average 1-2 knots towards Newport on the ebb(from Mystic) and 1-2 knots from Newport to Onset on the flood. Eldridge provides a good current chart for 1 to 5 hours each way. Kuttyhunk is another possible stop, but there's not much there, and the currents as I understand are awesome! Of course, all these times assume just sailing during the day, if you go 24 hrs. per day, with Port and Starboard watches, you could do it much quicker.
Captain and 1st. Mate of Hanalei would enjoy meeting you, have appreciated your comments and suggestions on the web this last year and more. Fair winds and following seas....

Re: Flotilla to Onset rendezvous
Catherine - I usually make the trip over three days. I usually leave from Tarrytown on the Hudson River early on a Saturday morning (tides allowing) and sail around Manhattan and up Hells Gate to LI Sound. I enjoy the sail overnight up The Sound and can recommend it if it would be your first all nighter. I usually pull into Newport, or better yet the Saconnet River, around dusk on Sunday evening. It is then a 35-40 mile trip up to Onset. Onset is along the South-Eastern end of the Canal so you can follow Buzzards Bay right up. You should avoid the currents of Woods Hole unless you are heading to Nantucket or The Vinyard.Catherine Monaghan wrote: We would like to sail in the company of other boats from Raritan Bay/New York Harbor to Onset, MA for the rendezvous there in July.

I am not sure exactly when I will be heading up but it will be a couple of weeks before the rendezvous. I am planning on leaving the boat in Onset and then returning with the whole family via car. I can let you know the exact schedule if you would like to join along for part or the whole the trip.

Re: Flotilla to Onset , for Chris & Catherine
Chris & Catherine,
I just spoke briefly to the Noank Shipyard about you all overnighting there. I was told that transient moorings are usually $30/night, they could discount somewhat for a number of vessels. They also have some slips available. They also suggested that a dinner for all may be had at Costello's restaurant on the pier(Abbott's Lobster Bar is also right next door to the shipyard, hence: "Abbott's and Costello's"). Prices are of course based on volume, and I only had a very brief discussion with them. Let me know what develops as the time gets closer. Chris is right, the sail up Long Island Sound is very nice. If you get lost, you only have to follow the North shore of Long Island, and you will end up at Mystic. I've made the trip single handed a number of times, even in fog where you couldn't see the bowsprit, and had no trouble. Outer markers are about 12 miles apart from Southport, CT to Mystic and there's not much to hit other than Faulkner's Island off of Guilford, CT. Hope to see you both in July. Now all we have to do is sand her bottom, paint it, launch and go. With forecast weather Saturday of 50 degree temps, I may do that this weekend. Hanalei will be swimming on April 1st. or sooner if I can manage it. Fair winds....
