Need advise on deck paint

Post by Jerry A. »

I am the proud new owner of a 1977 Cape Dory 27, Hull #65. The painted non-skid decks need to be repainted. Does anyone have any info on the proper match for the Cape Dory "tan", color name, color#,paint manufacturer? Any advise on application would also be appreciated. You can see brush strokes from the original application. I am leaning towards a 2 part polyurethane with a brushing converter additive for brush or roller application. I have heard good things about "AWL GRIP" brand paint. Is the original non-skid surface rough enough without a grit type additive? Any advise would be appreciated.I found the boat on this web site, bought her New Years Day and sailed her to her new home port this past weekend. I searched long and hard for a CD 27 or CD 28,and I think I have found just the right boat for me.
Thanks in advance for any advise,

Smooth Sailing,

sorry i can't help you on the proper match up on the tan, though you should be able to get close with what's out there on the market, even if you have to mix to achive the desired shade. If you are thinking of useing "Awlgrip" application is recommended by spray only. Look to useing Pettite easypoxy or Interlux paints. Please see posting"Refinishing Typoon Topsides" 1/15/99. Hope this will be of help to you,if you need any more imfo E mail me,and I will reply on this page. lot's of luck.

Jerry: I have CD27 Hull#66. I recently purchased her and in my refurbshing, re did the non skid. Color I am not sure of without looking at the Interlux chip chart in the biege family, but I did use sand to increase the non skid surface. If you are interested in the how, E-mail me for more info.

The 1 part urethane Brightside paint by interlux works well. with a roller you wont have brush marks. You can add their flattening agent and also non-skid compound. I did mine and like the results very much. I choose a color a bit lighter than the origianl CD color. Now it is posssible to walk on the deck bare foot when the sun is out and not burn the bottoms of my feet.

Smooth Sailing,
Jerry:

I've repainted both my CD 36 and a previous 30' Newport sailboat myself. On both I used Interlux two part polyurethane, its nasty stuff to use but pretty good paint. I tried the one part, it certainly was easier to apply, but it simply didn't have the abrasion resistance I felt it needed after all that work to put it on well.

I did not use any non-skid addititve for the Newport, and wound up being sorry I didn't. It looked pretty good, but was way too slippery.

On the Dory I experimented with several types of additives: Interlux's (not too bad, but expensive), plain sand (functional, but didn't look too good), before I wound up with Destin Fla beach sand. It's quartz (a mineral) rather than shell (calcium) based). I washed it several times before using it.

For prepping the non-skid I used Interlux's No-Sand, again good stuff but nasty. It's methylene choloride (aka paint stripper)with metal pieces in it. But at least you don't have to sand off all the non-skid fiberglas bumps to paint new non-skid material in it.

Buy the foam, low nap rollers and have the foam brushes ready for "tipping off" the paint to get rid of the bubbles.

I didn't worry about color match on either boat. Just like repainting an old car, it won't work, well not exactly. So decide to do the whole thing rather than just some panels. I used Hattaras Off-white, a little lighter in color, but still not white. It seems to reflect the heat better (judging by the bottom of the foot response). On the Newport I painted the hull also, using a dark blue. A nice color, but just like the tape said, it was be harder to get a good finish. It wound up being a "matt" finish. I liked it, but it wasn't for everybody. The lighter colors came out fine.

Interlux claims that its paint system is designed for brushing. Awlgrip says its stuff is for spraying only. Beyond that you'll hear lots of arguments about which paints are better. I can't make a claim w/r to that, but rolling and brushing is a whole lot easier experience wise, a lot less equipment intensive, and you don't run into issues w/r to spraying your neighbors boat and marina prohibitions (rightfully so).

Interlux provides tapes and/or videos on how to do it. Wear respirators with organic vapor cartridges or you'll get real stupid in a hurry (but you won't care!).

I found out (the hard way of course) that the easiest way to paint the non-skid and adjacent flat trim was to paint the trim first (backwards from most painting). This is because you can mask tape the flat deck, but not the non-skid. Therefore, prep the whole area, paint the flat areas first, then mask it and paint the non-skid deck.

Hope this helps. Just remember, free advice is sometimes worth jsut what you paid for it!!

Need advise on the process.

Hi, I am contiplating this task on my CD 28 Flybridge (power).
Did you guys strip the old paint off with fiberglass stripper before repainting? If yes, How did that go. Did it come right off?
Also, when tapeing out the sections to be repainted, how did you mask the rounded corners. Did you just stretch the masking tape around the corners? I haven't tried doing it, but they seem pretty tight to get tape to stretch that much. Is there a special tape for that kind of thing.
Thanks
Tony

I would contact Robinhood Marine in Robinhood, Maine, phone # 207-371-2525. They were helpful years ago in identifying the color and type of paint on my Bomar hatch down to the color name and number, which for those interested was Biloxi Beige, #8130-9568 available from Advanced Coatings @ 800-247-1117.
