winterizing outboards

ok it doesnt freeze out there in sunny california.
but if any one knows about winterizing the cooling system
for a 5 year old mercury outboard ( efi 200 )

i have taken the boat out today and it overheates , doesn't seem to be pumping water and when i used it last oct 1998 it was fine.
help from roswell nm

Frank, I'd bet you either have a blockage or need a new impeller, and I'd bet it was an impeller, especially if the one that is in there now is the original.

Frank,

Bob is right. Impellers can go on you in a flash. If it has not be changed in the past 5 years it has seen a good life. You will want to have the lower unit dropped and change out the water pump internals. Usually about $35 for a typical kit. Also if you have not changed out
the thermosat, now is a good time too.
