CD27 Forward Hatch

Post by Mike Thorpe »

Have a 1982 CD27 with a Bomar forward hatch. Can't open the hatch more than 45 degrees. The sliding support arms (aluminim) are oxidized and stop at 45 degrees. Would like to be able open the hatch to 90 degrees or more but thought I should ask before I lean on it.

Any thoughts or information would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike - first off, I would make sure that you have the knobs backed out
enough so that they are not hanging up in the indentations in the slide. I know with my Bomar, that the closer you get to 0 degrees, the more the indentations are worn down and the easier the knobs slide past. But, to be honest, I don't recall ever moving my hatch open more than about 45 degrees...I seem to get more breeze in down below.
My boat is covered up now, but maybe they are not designed to go more than 45. In any event, you could try sanding them down a little and see if that works. Have fun.

Bob

Thanks for the reply. The knobs are backed out all the and you are probally right about the 45 degrees maximum. Its just that I have a wind scoop that came with the boat and it would work so much better if I could get the hatch up to 90 degrees.

By the way why doesn't my keyboard have the symbol for degrees so that I wouldn't have to keep spelling it out???? Not a real question just my out of the water frustration showing thru.

Thanks again

Mike:

The hatch on my CD27 opens a full 90 degrees. If the knobs are backed all the way off, there must be some corrosion in the slides or hinges that is preventing further movement. I would suggest removing the slides before you lean too much; if that does it, clean or replace the slides.

Mike
The hatch on our 1981 CD27 opens to the point where it will lay on the deck. Its a bomar with screw down dogs on either side to keep it in position. You must have a corrosion problem.
Good Luck
