Tiller Attachment Fitting

Post by Don Kolenda »

Pardon the (lack of) correct terminology ... The tiller on our 74' CD25 (#76) has a lot of play in it. I went to replace / tighten the long bolt in the fitting attaching it to the post coming up thru the cockpit sole, etc but found that the holes in the the bronze fitting itself were "abraded open from friction" over the years (signs of bronze 'dust') such that the holes are now bigger the the bolt itself and thus the origin of the play in tiller. Bigger bolt doesn't work for numerous reason as a long term repair. Seems like that fitting needs to be replaced (?). Any sources (and name) for this piece or other suggestions. She's being tucked away now for winter in our yard and I'm taking inventory of stuff to get/buy thru the upcoming winter.

The tiller strap and cap assembly is available from Spartan Marine for around $150. The part number varies depending on the size of the rudder shaft. 800-325-3287

You could find someone locally to reweld the bronze so the holes are the correct size. A friend of mine did this himself for his cd28.
