Hello,
This is my first posting. I am looking at a 1977
CD25 that appears to be in good condition for the price with the
exception of the rudder stuffing box and wiring.
The boat has been modified with pedestal (Edson) steering
and to accomidate the height of the pulleys, the cockpit floor above the
stuffing box was cut upen and elevated 2" and boxed in
with teak. While steering the boat and observing the linkage,
I noticed that the entire stuffing box moves about a 1/4
inch from side to side. I also noticed that someone
has been Mickey Mousing fiberglass in and around the stuffing box.
Does this potential structural problem sound like it can
be fixed without unreasonable expense? Is this a common
failure point? Are there any faqs on this type of repair?
I would like to make this my first sailboat.

It sounds to me like you've got a jacked up job there! On my CD25 the rudder "stuffing box" is attached at the bottom of the hull and at the cockpit sole and is very solid. It sounds to me that on the boat you're looking at the cockpit sole has been cut away to allow for the wheel mechinism. This could leave the top of the rudderpost flapping in the breeze! I assume that it has been attached somehow. Make sure that it is well attached! A minor concern is this. The CD manual says that there may be some leakage around the rudder post under some conditions. I,ve never noticed any on mine. It would be no big deal because it would come into a self bailing cockpit. Where would it come on the boat you're looking at? Into the bilge? It isn't really a stuffing box because it dosn't have to be water tight the way it was origionaly built. Do you really want wheel steering on a CD25? There are a lot of these boats out there for sale. If you have any doubts about this retrofit find another CD25.
