New Sails

Post by Don S. »

Does anyone have a strong feelings about the various sellers of sails on the Internet. I've gotten a lot of quotes, some familiar names, some unheard of lofts, some high-priced, some low, some with different sails weights and sizes, based on the same set of specs.

Two years ago I bought a new main for my CD 28 and I found pretty much the same thing. My advise is to check them all out and get back to the ones you like with some of the other quotes. They will usually dicker. I got a couple of hundred dollars off my sail by saying North sails would make it cheaper.
I went with Hood sails eventually because their cloth is made especially for them. Almost all other lofts use the same cloth which is made in the same factory. Hood cloth is made without the use ( or so they claim) of resins. The weave is supposed to be more dense and thus will hold its shape longer. After 2 years I am very pleased with the sail and I was especially pleased with the customer service I got from Hood in the first place. Good Luck
Russ

I have had good luck with NorthSails. The Loft sails people are knowlegable and can hook you up with the best sail for you. Usually they will match or come close to competitors also they have great cloth and sail structure.

Check em out

I would find a sailmaker you trust and go with him. You can always check comparitive prices on the internet, etc., but when you have a problem, it's good to have a friend who's only a short ride to/from your boat. Fall's a good time to deal, btw.

Hood is about to make me a complete set of Vectran sails for my CD30. I have had Hood sails before on a Bristol 27 and they were far-and-away the best sails I have ever had. The Hood sails I had on the Bristol were still like new after the seven years I had the boat. That convinced me to go with Hood when I re-sailed my CD30.
