CD300 handling under sail/power

Post by peter suomala »

I am considering a CD300 and would be interested in owner comments regarding how it handles. Is it more suited under power or can I expect decent performance under sail? Is there also anything I should watch out for, or look for, when buying? Thanks in advance for all replies!

I have owned a cape dory300ms for four years. I have found the following: 1) ten knots of wind is perfect; the further you get above or below, the less you will like it 2)above 20 knots, I'd rather not be there 3) reef sooner than later 4) she is a delight to motor-sail in anything under 20 knots. In the four years I've had to replace an aluminum cooling tube that developed a pinhole coolant leak, tighten the transmission housing and replace the plate due to wear from a loose transmission, and repair a broken gooseneck for the self tending jib boom.
