Alternator Parts for Yanmar 1GM

Post by Stephen »

It looks like I have a problem with my voltage regulator. I hooked up my multimeter to the terminals and found the voltage went from around 15V (at idle) to 20V (fast RPMs). Unfortunately, the voltage regulator is internal in the Mitsubishi alternator that came with the engine.

Does anyone have any sources for Mitsubishi alternator parts?

How about a recommendation for a new alternator (not necessarily a Mitsubishi)?

Stephen:

My 1981 CD-27 came with an Hitachi alternator on the Yanmar YSM-8 (same as a 1-GM,I believe) when I purchased PATRICIA third hand a few years back. That alternator lives in a saltwater environment, has been abused by incidents such as an uninformed crew member's switching the main battery switch while the engine was running, having the ignition switched off while the engine continued to run (which I was warned not to do), being wired briefly in reverse by a not-too-bright captain/mechanic (me) and, amazingly, has never given me any problems. I had it thoroughly checked out by respected alternator repair services twice and it has always come back with a clean bill of health. It's listed in the manual as model LR135-31 and the regulator, which is of the internal, zener diode variety, is model TR1Z-28. Its rated at 35 amps @ 5,000 RPM regulated at 14.3 + or - .3 volts. As to where to obtain one, you might try Star Power Services, Inc. in Covington, LA, 1-800-628-9882. Ask for Lane McCraine. Hope this helps and good luck.
