Looks great. I hope to finish my coamings soon. I wonder if I made a mistake usingAfrican mohaghany for the caps. I was planning to leave them bare

Be assured that your posts are read, John.John Stone wrote:I do wonder sometimes if anyone reads this stuff.
I've been off the board for quite a while and am trying to catch up on what I missed. Even though I haven't had a chance to read your posts as you posted them, I will get to them eventually. Plus they serve as an excellent reference for anyone considering such a project in the future.
Smooth sailing,
Jim

Looking good, both of you!
I rebedded and revarnished CC's coamings this year. I hope to get the last coat of varnish on tomorrow so I can get the dodger on and sail over the weekend. I'll post a picture then.

Re: Cockpit Coaming Rebuild
I’m a little careless now since I’m working with one arm in a sling but I used a piece of scrap teak for the return. It will be ok for now. It’s tricky because the dodger needs to snap down there. I have an idea to redo it with a mahogany block/cap that covers that whole void there where it meets the cabin. Anyway the dodger covers all that corner. I used a teak spacer for the cleat and sanded a little so the 1/2” line would fit. This will do for a while. I know it all looks pretty terrible (return piece and the calking etc) but the coaming boards have some rott and splits. hopefully some day I can redo it all brand new and perfect. I just want functionality now.

Re: Cockpit Coaming Rebuild
I am amazed that you could accomplish that with one arm (I am sure that there is a story there). I hope you are soon back to two healthy arms, I always look forward to your project photos, such inspiration.

Re: Cockpit Coaming Rebuild
I was surprised how inexpensive the Afrikan mohoghany is compared to teak. I decided to refinish the forward end of the coaming cap. As you see it had to be grinded so the dodger will snap But Im ok with it like this. I'll clean it up a little and oil it.

Re: Cockpit Coaming Rebuild
Looks great. I never liked the way that Cape Dory built that area, hard to clean, even harder to varnish.
What is going to go into those inaccessible areas that can never be repainted, I am picturing little birds nests or perhaps, as we have here in the Midwest, wasps.

Re: Cockpit Coaming Rebuild
Port side came out much better. I sanded the outboard edge so the dodger would snap without that strip that is on the other side. I am reworking the starboard side now

Re: Cockpit Coaming Rebuild
Now that the forum is back up and operating it is time to update the thread in the coaming rebuild. It's complete. Bare cap installed. 9 coats of varnish. Turned out well I think. Some photos below. Will look for a better overall photo with the cap rail.

Re: Cockpit Coaming Rebuild
After watching the video I’m suffering from coaming envy. Very well done, as are all the others.
