You can get the Loos Pt-1 for about $100 and it will do both sizes.
The Loos web site (https://loosnaples.com/how-to-use-pt-se ... ion-gauges) lists the following cable sizes for their gauges:

Model Cable size
Model PT-1 Cable size 3/32", 1/8", 5/32"
Model PT-1M Cable size 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm
Model PT-2 Cable size 3/16", 7/32", 1/4"
Model PT-2M Cable size 5mm, 6mm, 7mm
Model PT-3 Cable size 1/4", 9/32", 5/16", 3/8"
Model PT-3M Cable size 7mm, 8mm, 9mm, 10mm

I assume you mean that 3/16" cable will fit into the rollers of the PT-1 and you can get a reading on the top scale. But it doesn't look like there is a chart for the PT-1 correlating gauge reading to the breaking strength of the wire, which I thought was used as a sort of yardstick for initial tensioning. Is that correct?

The scale on the left side of the gauge corresponds to the spring reading at the top. The values in red correspond to percent of breaking strength for the appropriate size wire. By the way, 3/16 wire needs a PT-2. For what it's worth, my boat requires both gauges. When you buy something that really works, you very quickly forget how much you paid for it.

Long overdue update! Got the Loos guage, tensioned in accordance with Megunticook's suggestions, and am much more satisfied this season. I ended up around 14% for my upper shrouds and haven't noticed much sag in the forestay so I didn't feel compelled to go tighter.

Many thanks to all who weighed in!
