Back to Eye Candy, here is a recent departure with daughter-in-law and grandson ( 1 of 6 btw ) pulling away from the Yacht Club, fenders flopping and all, for a first sail for the little one. I have more pics at my blogsite but thought this was very suitable for the category of "eye candy:"

Image

Here is my happy 1st Mate, first sail ever, he was so anxious to get in the water he'd already ditched his shorts! But we managed to snap this before his splash!

Image

And here is the conclusion to a great day of orientation sailing for the little ones, beautiful skies, slight winds, and a sure and reliable Cape Dory classic. I think you can tell by my smile what I think of her:

In the continuing journey of my Typhoon, here are two recent photos of her lying alongside the rigging dock where she performs at Lake Murray, South Carolina, and of that same rigging dock on 6 Dec as the lake undergoes a scheduled drawdown:

Image

And below, without the Typhoon alongside, due to the nearly 7 foot drawdown in effect. This condition will remain until refill begins on 1 JAN 2014:

Skeep,

I put a traveler on my 1973 Typhoon and found it makes mainsail trim so much better and easier....also has the benefit of pulling the boom to one side for a bit more room to move around the cockpit when preparing to get underway or tying up the boat after a sail. It did require cutting a larger (8" dia) access port to enable thru bolting the traveler to the aft deck. I used the Garhauer Marine traveler...I've seen other Tys with the Harken traveler which is much more expensive.

@stanc. I've been considering adding a traveler for a while now do you have any pictures of your set up. I actually purchased a piece of teak for the base plate a while back. Did you go the full length between the splash board or is yours narrower?
Sincerely,

Chris B.

So just before the turn of the year, the weather was perfect for a little deck painting. Grabbed my Epiphanes and went to work on the cockpit:

Taping off the cockpit:

Temps were about 50 and humidity was low. It dried quickly.

And the results were favorable!

Next will be the photos of the foredeck!

White vinegar is handy stuff. I've used it for years to clean up brasses on antique furniture. It will also act as a solvent to clean tools used with uncured epoxy. Does a pretty good job sprayed on weeds as well.
A teaspoon per bowl , just prior to serving , makes the flavors 'pop' in Portuguese kale soup.

Well, ok, back on topic, LOL...so here is the 2nd G-son dry sailing the Typhoon. His enthusiasm and grasp of the tiller tells me that he is a shoe-in for becoming a sailor! Lovely teak surrounds him as he sails the dory!

Sublimely simple. The orange on the Dory is actually marking the end of the dock which is immediately behind the dory. I figured you would wonder.... This photo was taken after mother nature did away with all that snow we got here in the South.

Recently found a great use for the ship's bell mount. The FM radio fits nicely in the West Marine basket. And, the Boat US emergency instructions are neatly obvious on the bulkhead. Takes away from the neatness of the cockpit but in an emergency I'd rather have functionality than artistry! My blogsite has details on when I ran out of gas on a day without wind! www.baggywrinkles.blogspot.com enjoy.

Since acquiring my Typhoon, I've been curious about the lack of a bow hook. Yet, with the enormity of the keel, the bow hook would have to be rather substantial indeed. Then too there is the bow plate of bronze, a magnificent touch to such a humble hull. The thick line that was routinely tied to the foredeck and looped out front for the trailer hook irritated me to no end. I thought all the time there should be something more fitting for securing the Ty to the trailer. In fact, since the boat floats onto the trailer bunks, there was no need to haul it onto the trailer. I can motor right onto the bunks or pull her with 2 hand lines on as well. Thus, I thought, how about something strong as bronze, and more manly looking than a rope tied incessantly around the foredeck cleat, turning green due to weather and prohibiting me from easily using that cleat for tying up to the dock. A chain perhaps?

So off to the local West Marine for a bit of chain:

Image

Thus the solution was to lace the chain around the bow plate in such a way as to not permit any pressure on the SS pins and to not use the chain as a tow link but only as a security device when the boat is under BMW power rather than sail power:

Image

I talked the solution over with the guys at West Marine, metal to metal contact was deemed ok, and the strength of the chain was very secure, and after the above photo I had the chain cut a bit more to fit more snug under the bow plate but not so much that it would dangle against the hull. I offer this as a solution. I certainly invite dialogue on this. However, it provides the assurance I was looking for without the unnecessary wrapping of thick line around the deck all the time. Less cluttered on deck! Plus, the chain lends her that old-school look she is so prone to evoke.

And illustrating the look on deck, here is a closeup from sailing this past weekend where you can see the heavy SS connector I used for the chain and the chain itself, while underway, loose enough for the SS pins yet snug enough for being out of the way. It doesn't interfere with the forestay or anything else at this point:

Well, the day has finally arrived! La Belle Vie is no longer, as the Naming Ceremony took place during the Rappahannock River Yacht Club Nationals competition, our Dory was named Baggy Wrinkles!

Here is one of the many photos of the event which took place during the RRYC Nationals June 6-8:

Another few transformation photos for your viewing pleasure as Baggy Wrinkles continues her journey:

Here she is sitting patiently for me at the Yacht Club on Lake Murray, waiting.... If you're wondering, I got the graphics from boat-lettering.com and I was quite pleased with their customer service. Their online app "sizes" your lettering so that you don't have to figure it out on your own. Note the "Cape Dory Typhoon" on the starboard--added to keep folks from asking me what kind of boat it is...
Image

This was one of those one-handed photos because you can't take your hand off the tiller for but a second! I was sitting on the leeward side while taking the photo--everything looks out of alignment...compass, the shrouds to windward look as if they are several feet ahead of the leewards..lol What fun to get a gust while at helm on the leeward...the dory just keeps on moving!
Image

I'm especially fascinated by the Ritchie Kayak compass because you get the added clinometer effect looking at it up close:
