CDSAO 10th Annual Mtg. Pics from Liberte and of the Woodwind

Post by skairis »

Here are a few pictures taken on board Liberte, the Schooner and of the the Schooner Woodwind during the 10th Annual Meetings weekend's Brunch and Cruise on Sunday, November 5, 2006.

You'll notice the picture quality from a $7 disposable camera isn't the best, but the pictures certainly capture the participation of all on board interacting with Captain Chris and Jan!

A good time was had by all and the Brunch was delicious especially the Scones!

CDSOA'10th Annual Meeting Pictures on Liberte', The Schooner
Pictures from the deck of Liberte' the Schooner:

Though not in any particular order....

- Captain Chris, First mate, Jan, and their lovely daughter were
our hosts.

- Not the 'Indian Summer' day we had hoped for, but not too bad
the temperature was a crisp 47 degree F when we boarded.

- No rain or fog, but a bit overcast. Gloves were provided to all!
Though the stout of heart may have declined...

- Everyone was invited to assist with the hoisting of the sails
and did!

- We learned the importance of a 'figure 8 coil' and how to keep
the lines tidy!

- Along with some fascinating details about the Schooner herself,
the US Naval Academy, the US NAVY and the harbor and
Chesapeake Bay.

- It was quite a site to behold the Woodwind leaving the harbor
and passing by with more then 40 Cape Dorians aboard. In fact,
we were so close we could see the whites of their eyes and
what I believed to be their coffee hoisted high in salute as they
passed us by!

- Well into the cruise the faint sound of a Sea Shanty lead by
Caryl P. Weiss, the Shantymam, drifted in the air over our
bow from their direction while...

- Those of us on the Liberte' were treated to a personal story
of having met Carl Alberg and knowing his family...sharred by
Dixon Hemphill who knew the Alberg family well and had
met 'Uncle' Carl Alberg, designer of many of our Cape
Dories during as a result of knowing Carl's nephew and
staying in Carl's sister's home during a stay in Sweden.

- Those on board the Liberte' included: Richard and Carol Turner,
Lou and Marcia Ostendorff, Shanna and son Keaton Paxton, Jack
and Jo Chamberlin, Peter and Jane Cregger, Dixon and June
Hemphill, Al, Sylvia and Andrew Pentajan, Fred and Joyce
Wise, John and Nancy Martin, and Mike and I.

- As stated earlier, you'll notice the picture quality from a $7
disposable camera isn't the best, but the pictures certainly
capture the participation of all on board. The interaction with
Captain Chris and Jan was even more then we had anticipated
which really added to the overal experience. A good time was
certainly had by all. The coffee was hot and the Brunch was
delicious-- especially the scones!

- Though the sun came out and the temperature rose into the mid
50?s just as we headed back in the sun peaked back behind the
clouds and the wind came up too! A few came back and asked i
if any of those gloves were left? ;-) Of course there were, along
with a few skull caps and fleece ear bands as well!

On a personal note...
- This this two day event was a fantastic way to close my 2 year
terms as Commodore. More then 95 CDSOA, Inc. members
participated in one event or another with another dozen friends,
vendors, speakers, and entertainers rounding out our total
participation to over a 100!!

- Seeing so many, having so much fun together was very
gratifying. Seeing more then 70 CDOSA, Inc. members sailing
together was phenomenal!!

THANK YOU EACH AND EVERYONE FOR MAKING THIS 10th ANNUAL
MEETING THE BIGGEST AND BEST OF THEM ALL!

On a broader note...
- Thank you also to every CDSOA, Inc. member over the years
who diligently worked and participated throughout the first 10
years to mold CDSOA, Inc. into the active sailing community it is
today - A HUGE SUCCESS!

Finally,
- An invitation to every member and future members who will join
the CDSOA, Inc. ranks -- BE AS ACTIVE AS YOU CAN SO THE NEXT
10 YEARS will be equally good or even surpass the first!

Fair winds always to all! I look forward to seeing everyone
at the winter meetings in 2007!

Sharon Kairis, Commodore 2004-2006
Cape Dory Sailboat Owner's Association, Inc.
