CD30 or CD28?

Post by K7ZB »

I am interested in buying a 1983 CD 30 and have come across one advertised as such, however, the Hull ID Number reads CPD0280M83C.

If I am interpreting hull numbers correctly, this is really a 28, correct?

Thanks for the assist!

Hull # 280 sounds about right for a 1983 CD 30.

CD 28 hull #s were into the 300s by then.

Near miss!

Thanks for the help... and I am glad it is a 30 since I just drove up to look at another one that sold to the first guy that saw it in 5 minutes. It was a great boat, too.

Odd

Post by Clay Stalker »

Odd that the hull # includes a 28....most hull #s I have been involved with had the length of boat and hull # as part of the overall hull #.....well, I guess all is not absolute....hmmmm.

Hull Number

Post by Ed Haley »

The hull number CPD0280M83C indicates that it is the 280th hull of that model. The 28 does not refer to a CD28. If it's advertised as a CD30, it probably is.

30 or 28

Am I correct in thinking that the 30 has a built in stove and the 28 has a counter top stove?

Numbering Differences

Post by Clay Stalker »

I would never dispute my friend Ed Haley....he is one of the folks on this board who knows what he is talking about, and says it with discretion and respect. I'm sure he is correct.

My current boat has a hull # of CER27013M81C. This signifies that she was built by C.E. Ryder Corp, is a Sea Sprite 27 (actually 27'11"), is hull #13, and was built in 1981.

I am happy to learn that there are other ways to identify a boat as I have always looked to this number for information that may not be there!! :D

I might add if you look in the starboard cockpit locker floor you might see a date stamped in the liner of the Typhoon. I cannot speak for other CD's. This date apparently means the boat or liner was either started or finished. The date stamped in my liner reads 10-1-74. Anyone have any idea what this date references?
Just curious!

To further confuse the topic .....

Post by Ed Haley »

Some manufacturers, if not all, make a distinction between year of manufacture and model year. As in automobiles, sailboats/boats completed in the fall of the year (say 1983) are advertised as the next year's model (1984 in this example). Just as in the fall of 2007 we'll be able to buy 2008 model year cars. I'm not sure if this is used in an industry-wide manner.

As another example, my CD330 was completed in October 1985. It was the first CD330 made, using hull #121 of the CD33 model. But according to blue book, it is a 1986 CD330. I believe it was Dave Perry from Robinhood Marine who informed me of this information when I was researching data on my CD330 when I was in the process of purchasing her. Dave was part of the team that made the first CD330s.
