Intrepids made by Cape Dory

Re: Intrepids made by Cape Dory
Mariannne,
I sail an Intrepid 9M out of Yorktown, Va. I have seen a sistership
in nearby Deltaville, and a few others for sale occasionally on the
Chesapeake. I have also seen several listed for sale in Soundings
over the years. I think quite a few 28s and 9Ms were sold new out
of Annapolis. I've also communicated with another 9M owner in the
Northwest.
My understanding is that the first boats were all 28s, based on the
hull molds purchased from Grampion of Canada. I think the 9M (30')
is just a stretched version, but this is just my guess. There were a
few 35' boats built also until Intrepids were discontinued. Then in
the mid 90s, I think one 40' boat was built on a Chuck Paine design,
but I believe the Intrepid name was just brought out of retirement for
this project, since by then Cape Dory was out of business.
It would be nice if the boat specs/histories on this site also listed
the Intrepid range as they are part of the family. One step inside
an Intrepid and you know it is a Cape Dory built boat.
There has been some Intrepid discussion on this board, just use the
search feature ("Intrepid")to find the topics of interest.

Michael

Re: Intrepids made by Cape Dory
I am the aforementioned 9M owner in Seattle WA. I have hade Mariah since May of this year. She is my first boat and I love it. I don't know a lot about them, but Michael seems to have some good info. I hope to get out again soon as I have had elbow surgery that has sidelined me for a month and that was during the nicest weather of the season. Figures. Anyway, any information I have I am happy to share. Thanks. Are there any Inrepid owners out there--I've been sailing in a 28foot Intrepid out of Rockport, MA

Re: Intrepids made by Cape Dory
In 1983, I was lucky enough to sail a new intrepid 40 from portland to Plymouth England (19 Days). We had terrible weather for over 1/2 the journey. The boat was great. I twas center cockpit, cutter rigged version and I know that it has sailed in 84 and 88(I think)the OSTAR race for its then owner A.Thomas.
Its a shame that Cape Dory don't make an equivelent boat now.
