CD30 Bowsprit

Does anyone have a plan view of the original bowsprit with dimensions 1977 vintage,also was ash commonly used? thanks for any information. Ron

My 1983 CD30 has an all teak bow sprit, but I have to say that this must have been an option, as there are a lot of other CD30's with ash or oak for the bowsprit. Of the 6 CD30's in the APostle Island area now, mine is the only one with teak..how about the rest of you?

I am not aware of a plan view of the bowsprit. Are you rebuilding or making a new one? I could photograph and dimension mine for you, although rough dimensions should be close enough, as you will want to add the bow roller of your choice.

Larry, I think White Oak was the material used for the early Cape Dory Bowsprits. My 1981 originally had a white oak bowsprit. When mine rotted out, I called the factory and apparently this was a more common problem than they liked and they had a ready answer, replace with teak. While white oak is stronger, the teak is strong enough.

By the way, it appears that if the original white oak was going to rot, probably because it was not properly bedded when the boat was built, the rotting problem was going to occur fairly quickly, PERI was seven years old when I had the new teak one put on.

Ours is an '83 cutter with a teak sprit.

My 1978 CD30 bowsprit appears to be ash. I an in the process of replacing it with white oak. White oak is stronger and considerably cheaper than teak. I am trusting that I will bed it properly to avoid rot underneath. The original mainly seems to have suffered from checking and rot from the top.
