CDSOA "2007 Maine Cruise" .....

Carl Thunberg and I have been "chatting" back and forth via e-mail regarding this year's CDSOA Maine Cruise which we're hoping will take place along the mid-coast of Maine between Casco and Penobscot Bays.

Presently, we have a very tentative cruise itinerary and we're hoping for some feedback from you, the folks in Maine and those who are interested in joining us for another great Maine Cruise and a chance to meet fellow CDSOA members and CD owners this summer.

Carl has offered his camp at Poorhouse Cove on the Johns River as a destination for our group where we can have a clambake, barbecue or potluck ashore. We don't want to pass up this gracious offer and great opportunity. The best dates for Carl are between August 12-25. So we're really hoping to set August 13-17 as the timeframe for the cruise with the following week as an alternative.

Anyway, here are a couple possible 5-day cruise itineraries.

August 13-17

• Mon. -- Maple Juice Cove, St. George River or Hornbarn Cove, Meduncook River
  (anchor, group potluck dinner in evening)
  Tue. -- Poorhouse Cove, Johns River
  (anchor, group clambake, barbecue or potluck at the Thunberg's camp)
  Wed. -- Seal Cove or Pleasant Cove, Damariscotta River
  (anchor, dinner on your own or group potluck)
  Thu. -- Boothbay Harbor
  (moorings - Tugboat Inn Marina)
  Fri. -- Robinhood Cove (anchor) or Riggs Cove (moorings-Robinhood Marine Center), off the Sheepscot River and Knubble Bay
  (group dinner at the Osprey Restaurant at Robinhood Marine Center or at the Robinhood Meeting House)

or something like:

• Mon. -- Maddock Cove, Ebencock Harbor, Sheepscot River
  (anchor or mooring - Boothbay Region Boatyard, group potluck dinner in evening)
  Tue. -- Poorhouse Cove, Johns River
  (anchor, group clambake, barbecue or potluck at the Thunberg's camp?)
  Wed. -- Maple Juice Cove, St. George River or Hornbarn Cove, Meduncook River
  (anchor, dinner on your own or group potluck, we'll decide then)
  Thu. -- Seal Cove or Pleasant Cove, Damariscotta River
  (anchor, group potluck dinner in evening)
  Fri. -- Robinhood Cove (anchor) or Riggs Cove (moorings-Robinhood Marine Center), off the Sheepscot River and Knubble Bay
  (group dinner at the Osprey Restaurant at Robinhood Marine Center or at the Robinhood Meeting House)

Glad to hear the plans are in the works. We are looking forward to it! Actually, our cruise this summer is all we are thinking about and it is what is getting us through the long hours of work this winter.

We will be sailing "Evergreen" North (or really East) along the Maine coast in August. We will make every effort to attend the cruise for all or at least part of the cruise. My vote is for dates earlier rather than latter in the month since we will be leaving the Portland area around the first of the month or slightly before. From our point of view everything depends on the arrival and departure of crew at the beginning and end of the month (we must be near a significant airport at those times). Of course the dates must primarily be convenient for those hosting the cruise and we wish to thank everyone for all their hard work in advance.

Here's a little incentive for our Casco Bay friends who may be on the fence about making the trip east to Mid-Coast Maine. The Portland Yacht Club Monhegan Island Race will be held on the weekend before the CDSOA Maine Cruise. Here's the link in case you want to check it out http://www.monheganrace.org. I don't know much about the race itself, but I was overtaken by the leaders once on my annual transit from Portsmouth to Poorhouse Cove. It was a hoot pretending I was holding them off!

This would put you right off Muscongus Bay just in time to relax the pace a bit and join us on the cruise. The first boat to arrive in Poorhouse Cove gets to tap the homebrew keg!

Harbor Island is a great spot! You can hike on the islands too as long as you stay away from the house...

We did a very similar cruise to this last fall, and it was fantastic. Our plans for August are a bit murky at this time, but thumbs up for the itinerary, and we will join up for as much as we can, hopefully all. Thanks Carl and Cathy!

I just took a look on the chart and in the cruising guide. Harbor Island sounds like a really nice spot but the anchorage looks pretty small. Is there enough room in there for a group of boats? Remember that this is a rendezvous cruise so suggestions for different destinations need to take that into consideration. An anchorage should be big enough for our group of boats plus whoever else may be anchored in there. But if there's enough room in there for a dozen boats, then it's a possible alternative to Maple Juice Cove.

It wasn't our intent to suggest Harbor Island as a destination. We are in complete agreement with your choices for the cruise. We just posted the picture so that others could see what a nice cruising area Muscongus is.

On another subject, we enjoyed meeting everyone last Saturday even though it seems as if some of the members have spend more time on our boat then we have.

Not enough room for 12 boats at Harbor Island but three of my favorites are Love Cove in Ebenecook, Seal Cove up the Sheepscot river or Hen Cove near Quahog Bay. Seal cove could fit quite a few boats but just make sure you go over the shoal spot at mid tide or better. My all time favorite Casco bay anchorage is Hen Cove.

Please don't tell too many people about Hen Cove or everyone from Quahog bay will come over to Hen Cove and I would really hate that. Hen Cove is located to the East of Yarmouth Island and just to the North and behind two smaller islands. On the chart the outer part of this area is called Ridley Cove. There is a sunken wreck in there but it is well marked with sticks. You should have the whoe cove to your selves. Please keep this cove a secret though!

It's a bit early for us to make plans but we will most probably participate in some of the activities.

...and right now -- just possibilities.....

I spoke with our Commodore a couple days ago and he mentioned that he's really interested in moving this year's annual meeting to August and having the meeting at or near Robinhood, ME. He's trying to get Andy Vavolotis to address the group and that seems the best way to do it.

So what we're possibly looking at (NOTE that I said "possibly") is the CDSOA Maine cruise taking place Monday-Friday, Aug. 13-17 ending at Robinhood, followed by the annual meeting there, Aug. 17-19?, followed by a cruise from there to Little Kennebec Bay (Rocque Bluffs) for the BBQ at Peter's. Right now it's all up in the air, so don't hold your breath.

According to the CDSOA by-laws, the annual meeting is supposed to be held in November. But I think that can be changed for this year if it's approved by the Board of Directors. Again, don't hold your breath.

So if everything works out, and you've been dreaming about cruising in Maine, this may be the year to do it. Now we just have to wait and see how things pan out.

Well it looks like the CDSOA's annual general membership meeting won't be moved from November to August afterall. Since it won't be in August, it won't be in Maine either.

The tentative plans, pending final approval by the Board of Directors, are for the meeting to be on Saturday, November 3, at the Highlander Inn and Conference Center in Manchester, NH. The Commodore is trying to get Andy Vavolotis (former owner of Cape Dory Yachts) as our guest speaker. You'll hear more about it as plans are finalized.

November 2007 will be busy in NH due to Presidential primary activity (if you think it is busy in NH already on the news, think what it is literally weeks before the actual primary). CDSOA members should be urged to make lodging arrangements early when the dates and location are finalized to avoid getting caught in the crunch. There are a LOT of transient people in NH for months before the primary. Great business for the food and lodging industry in NH.

But I'd love to have only a 80 minute drive to the meeting vs the 10 hour drive to Annapolis, although a fine location.

The Manchester airport (code MHT for those searching for air schedules) is a locally dominant Southwest Airlines station, with mainline/regional service from many of the legacy airlines. But I'm jumping the gun for the tentative arrangements...
