Gear Slipping 3 HP?

Post by John Pendergast »

The other day I started my engine to bring the boat - Typhoon Weekender - to the dock and the forward gear wouldn't engage completely. I have a 3 HP YachtTwin Evinrude (not sure of year). When I pulled the gear lever it moved forward but the prop slipped in and out of gear. Any one experience this problem? Major or minor transmission problem? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

- John

John:

Bring a couple of adjustable wrenches with you and pull the cover off the engine. Watch the linkage for the gear shift lever while you shift from neutral to forward. In most outboards there's a plate in that linkage that prevents you from shifting into forward gear when the engine is revving too high in neutral. Sometimes the plate slips a bit, so that you can't fully engage the gear. Loosen the plate and see whether the problem disappears.

Good luck!

I've owned 2 of those smooth running little 2 cylinder 2 strokes and neither had a gear shift...they were built in the late 60's...are you sure you're not talking about the side mounted throttle lever?

did you check the shear pin? it may make it seem that it is not engaging.
