Packing (Flax) Size? CD30 Universal

Post by Chuck »

With the original stuffing box and the M18 Universal engine, and 1" shaft, do any of you know the size of the packing for the stuffing box. 1/4" is the only size mentioned in the Spartan Catalog. I want to order the new GFO fiber packing and I'm reasonably sure I need 1/4", but it would to good to confirm this. Thanks for your help.

1/4" on my CD30

Post by Harold H »

Hi Chuck,

I have a CD30 with the Universal engine and 1" shaft. I use 1/4" packing.

Chuck,

I am sure it is 1/4 too. I think all the CD's with the 1 inch shaft would have the same Spartan packing gland fitting and 1/4 inch packing will do.

I use a drywall screw to screw into the old packing and pull it out and then repack three layers deep staggerring the but ends of the packing at as close to even spacing as possible. Using the PFTE packing and teflon goop, I do this job every two seasons and it seems to work.

Best of luck,
Paul

synthetic packing

I'm wondering if this would work in the rudderpost gland. It may not produce enough friction to to get a good seal.
Has anyone tried this ?

Rudder post packing

Post by Chuck »

Ron,
I'm not sure what your question is, but we repacked my rudder post stuffing (CD30C) a few months ago, using the PTFE packing purchased at west marine. There is a lubricant that needs to be used. My friend already had that. The GFO fiber packing, IMHO, would not be necessary on the rudder shaft. The rudder shaft isn't spinning like the prop shaft. The GFO cost over $17 with shipping.
