Water Pumping up Rudder Post-CD 28

Post by Wayne Van Citters »

I have just had a sea trial of the CD 28 I am seriously considering. Under power (and at 3-4 knots) water started being pumped up the rudder post and into the cockpit. At 5 knots this was a considerable amount. I am almost certain I saw something about this on this exchange a few weeks ago, but now cannot locate any information. Is this common? Does anyone have a recommended fix (outside of remaining stationary!!)

You have to define "considerable," but water in the cockpit through the rudder post is normal. I get enough to get the cockpit floor wet, but it's nothing that floods the boat, or anything like that.

Where will you be sailing?

I had the same problem initially. The volume of water made quite a stream to the cockpit drains. I reduced it almost to nothing by wrapping the opening with whipping twine. It has lasted all season, has not interfered with the steering and has kept our feet dry!

I had the same problem on our first motoring on our CD27. After smearing some waterproof axel grease into the post, I've had no more water at all for 4 seasons.
