On Friday, 9/10/99, I turned on my Micrologic 5000 Loran-C (10 years old with upgrade in 92) to see if it was affected by any of the dates that seem to spur some people into thinking are disastrous for equipment such as this. I was at a slip in Confederation Basin in Kingston, Ontario. The unit gave my longitude as 79 degrees W, which would place my somewhere on Lake Huron, given the same approximate latitude. I checked the time the unit was using and it was about an hour off (I think it was an hour later). Anyone else experience any similar problem? Is there a way to correct the instrument error?
.
My Garmin 48 works just fine and gives the correct Lat/Long. It was good to know that I really didn't have to sail 500 miles back to Clayton, NY the next day.

Another Loran-C Question

Re: Another Loran-C Question
Ed,
I think you need to do a complete restart of the Micrologic LORAN. If you have the manual, it will tell you how to do it. You DO need the startup pass words to do this though, so make sure you know what they are before you dump the entire memory. My Micrologic did not suffer any anomalies when I started it up last weekend. Unfortunately, Micrologic filed what was essentially bankruptcy in the far east and did not recover, so Micrologic no longer EXISTS! That means NO technical support is available. The first thing I would do is try a complete restart. Of course, this means that you will loose all waypoint data you currently have in the system, but you can re-do that. Good luck....

Thanks. I'll give it a try. I'd really like to resurrect the unit. I'll let you know how I make out the next time I'm aboard.

Re: More...it should work...
Ed,
I did a complete restart on the Micrologic LORAN on Hanalei when I bought her two years ago. The reason for doing so was to completely wipe all the old waypoint data and other user inputed information from the unit. I followed the directions in the manual, used the proper security codes(that the previous owner had written in the manual!)and everything worked just fine. I think if you try it, it should work. Another thing about doing it, is that you will re-learn a lot about the system, and you end up with an essentially brandy-new clean program. I have thought about doing a restart every year, and then re-installing any waypoint or other information I want for the year. I usually write a way point list identifying each waypoint name, Lat/Lon, characteristics of the point etc. But, if ya get lazy and don't keep up the list, ya just end up with a bunch of garbage in the LORAN. Anyhow, just some more information, let me know how ya make out....

Re: Uh....maybe NOT....
On another web site I read that the Micrologic "Admiral" LORAN will not reinitialize correctly. I'm not familiar with that model, but if that's what ya got it might be a problem. That site does say that you can send the unit out for a chip replacement and that cost is about $75. I'd still try the restart first...Ed,

Re: Another Loran-C Question
I'm not a current LORAN user or authority, but at least 15 years ago I frequently used a LORAN system that went by the name Apollo 612 Bandit in an old funky Cessna. It had the option of auto or manual chain selection, and it seemed to me that I used the manual chain select because LORAN systems can sometimes automatically select the wrong chain and generate data that puts you in strange and exotic places far away from your actual location.
When significant and obvious data errors occur, it may be appropriate to verify that you are locked in to the appropriate chain. A fellow pilot friend years ago had a Micrologic, and this problem did occur. Granted, it was many years ago, but it may still be a relevant issue to pursue.
For what it's worth.
