Avatars

Post by Peter Kozup »

I used to think I was computer literate, but these days every time I try to use my computer I find that I know less and less about more and more. I have wanted to change my Avatar on this website to show either my mug or my boat, but the settings stipulate that the Avatar must be no more than 6 KB, while the digital photos I have are much larger than that, around the 70 - 110 KB range. I am not able to use these as an Avatar. So, I ask those of you who have done it, how do I make the photos of either myself or of my boat small enough to include in my personal information as an Avatar? Is there something on the website that tells how to do this? If so, I've missed it.
I suspect that this is something so simple as to be embarrasing, but I have three daughters and for me there is little that is embarrasing anymore.
Thanks for your help.

looking in your favorite photo editing program and finding the resize or image/canvas size function. Maybe look in Help. Once found, open the original picture you want to use, resize it to the boards spec then SAVE IT UNDER A NEW NAME. Ship it up to your profile and check it out. Use a simple pic, as it ends up being quite small.

If all else fails, find a kid that has experience explaining things to adults. There a few left in the world.

Mark's correct, you need to use a photo editor. If you have a PC then you already have Microsoft Photo Edtitor (it comes pre-installed). To check, just double-click on the photo that you want to use and see what program opens. Whether it's the software that you installed to work with your camera or Microsoft Photo Editor, it should allow you so change the size of the image. "Resize" it so that it is no larger than 80 x 80 pixels at 72 dpi and the file size is less than 6K then save it with a new name. That's the file you'll upload.

avatars allotment too small

I would like the board to consider increasing the file size for avatars. This would allow us to use more creative avators than the 6 kb currently alloted.
