The Hull Number on the Transom???

The Hull Number on the Transom???
There is an abandoned Cape Dory in my marina in CT. I am very interested in trying to buy this vessel and refurbishing it. It has a number on the transom hull: CPDH0237M820. Is there anything that you could tell me about the boatlike the year, model or size. I cannot find the name of the owners in your registry. It has not been touched in at least five years.
I thank you very much for any info you can provide me.

Re: The Hull Number on the Transom???
I'm not certain, but I believe this must be a 1982 Cape Dory with an outboard engine. That's what the 82O at the end means (19)82 O (outboard). I'm guessing it's a CD 25, but that should be the easy part to determine.

>>It has a number on the transom hull: CPDH0237M820.<<
237 is the hull #, the 237th of the size to be built. 82 is the year.
>>I cannot find the name of the owners in your registry.<<
Have you asked at the marina? They don't store boats in their yard for free. If the boat has a state registration #, you might be able to find the owner through the state registry, but I'd start with the marina. A boat that's been there that long might have been abandoned due to accumulated marina charges.

Re: The Hull Number on the Transom???
Comparing the number with my 85 CD26 outboard, sounds like one of the last CD25 outboard (has outboard engine well) #237, 1982 that was built. If you see an outboard motor well, that's the best indication that it is a 1982 CD25. The number of hulls (237) also indirectly confirm this when compared to the number of CD25s that were built.

Re: The Hull Number on the Transom???
I don't think it's a 25. I owned hull 584 (Dauntless) until last year. Her number is CPDE0584M78A. She's a 78 model so an 82 would have a number higher than 584. Whatever size she is, I'm glad someone is thinking about setting her free. Give her a chance and I'm sure she'll take good care of you.Comparing the number with my 85 CD26 outboard, sounds like one of the last CD25 outboard (has outboard engine well) #237, 1982 that was built. Re: The Hull Number on the Transom???
OK, who can really read those Hull IDs? You will find a quick reference at
http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm
Looking at:
CPDH0237M820
CPD - obviously is CaPe Dory and this is confirmed in the CG data base.
H - means what? CD 36s seem to have T in this position. Is that the model? All versions of the hull serial number in the hull ID are five characters, so maybe these letters in position 4 are combined with the next four positions to make a complete serial number which, in the case of Cape Dory also includes the model?
0237 is obviously the "serial number." Did they always start with 0001?
M - I believe this means the date to follow is the manufacturing date. C would be used for a certification date. In this case, the year and month of manufacture follow
82 - is the model year. Note that it could have been manufactured as early as August of '81
O or 0? - The next character should be the month in the model year which starts with August as A. So O is out of the range of months. Could it be a "C"? If so, that would mean that it was manufactured in October of '82.
Note that after Aug. 1, 1984, the format changed with the date of certification as the 9th and 10th characters and the model year as the 11th and 12th characters. The coding of the months also changed such that January is "A," February is "B," etc.
Does anyone know if there is a relationship between the letter immediately folllowing the three character manufacturer code and the model?

Re: The Hull Number on the Transom???
Daniel,
The first three digits of the HIN represent the manufacturer's ID code: CPD=Cape Dory
The next five digits of the HIN represent the hull serial number:
H0237
The last four digits represent the date of certification: M820=1982
The HIN does not reference the model or size of the boat in any way. Whatever model she is, she is a 1982 Cape Dory, hull# 237.
For more info regarding the HIN you can check out this <a href="http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow ... website</a>.
One of the tricks I use to identify our CDs is by counting the ports and looking for deck items like travellers and dorade boxes. (Of course if it's under sail the sail logo is a dead giveaway.) They're installed in different places on different models. For instance, the CD270 through the CD32 have 8 opening ports (4 on each side), usually bronze. The CD25 through the CD27 only have 6 opening ports (3 on each side). The Typhoon Sr and CD22 and 22D have 2 ports on each side. Some of the boats have midboom sheeting where the traveller is located on a bridge over the cabintop, others have the traveller on the bridge deck and others have end boom sheeting. All of these things will help you identify it. The next time you're admiring the boat take note of whether it has a bowsprit or not, how many ports it has, how many dorades if any and whether they're mounted port or starboard, where the traveller is located, and if it has a staysail club. Repost your findings and I'm sure someone will help you identify it.
