Westerbeke 10/2 owners

Westerbeke engines are also used to power electrict generators. When Westerbeke designed this engine for marine use they forgot one thing... The engine is tilted backwards about 15 degrees. This affect the oil level in two ways.

1 The dipstick will read Low. This year I changed my oil. I let the engine run a couple of minutes. I let it set and checked the level. It was low, so I remarked the dipstick to where it read, because I knew it was full.

2. The oil pan has the drain hose tapped in the front of the pan. When you drain the oil, about a 1/2 quart stays in because the rear of the pan is lower. This is the worst oil because all the sludge settles at the lowest point. You can drop the pan and reverse it. The bolt pattern is exactly the same each way. (10 bolts) This will put the drain in the rear at the lowest point, and the hose now extends to the front. You can order the pan gasket from Hansen Marine, Westerbeke pt # 33169 ($25) Hanson's tel # is 800 343 0480

This may be true for other engins as well. Just order the gasket first and conpare the bolt pattern.

Hopes this helps someone
