A Tiller Master Auto Pilot came with my 28 foot Cape Dory. The autopilot will power up and humm along, but the shaft that runs from the box to the tiller will unscrew and extend to the tiller but will then quickly pull back into the box and stay. No matter how much i turn the compass knob. Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: Tiller Master autopilos??
i think mine did a similar thing. it turned out that the thing had been port mounted prior to my purchase (used) and the compass sticker was turned 180. it did fine when right on course, but went the wrong way when it reacted to course changes. have you got the manual? it may help. let me know if you need a copy.

The same reaction occurred on my Autohelm 4000W pilot when I relocated the fluxgate compass farther from the engine (it had to be oriented 180 degrees from the previous position). To correct the reversed course adjustments, I merely reversed the power leads on the autopilot's motor and it worked fine. This is what the manual suggested to do.
