Depth Sounder Transducer

Post by Bill »

Okay, I am ready to install the DS45 on Rhapsody.

I got the DST55 in hull puck transducer, and the directions say to epoxy it directly to the hull (after surface prep).

I know others have used the PVC glued to the hull technique, and am wandering which I should use? I dont like the sound of the transducer "permenantly" epoxied to the hull!!!!

Recomendations please!!!!!!!!!!

Bill

On my CD26 I did the following...
I took an 18" length of 3"PVC plastic pipe and cut one end at an appropriate angle so that when glued to the hull beneath the v bunk just off the center line of the keel it was verticle in relation to the waterline...I used lots of silicone bathtub caulk for glue...glued the pipe against a bulkhead as well as the hull so it is well supported. I then droppped the puck in the 3" pipe and filled it almost full with water although I plan to replace the water with 'red pop' anti freeze this winter...I also put a slotted cap on the pipe (no glue)to limit evaporation of the water. The slot was to allow clearance for the puck's wire. At first it didn't work...I think the water was slightly areated...but after about 30 minutes it started working just fine. One caveat...make sure there are no voids in the hull laminate where you glue the pipe...I tested the area using just the puck and a big glob of vaseline between the puck and hull.
