The Vigil radar which came with my CD36 when I bought the boat is no longer working. I am looking to replace the unit with something new. Any opinions about radars from fellow CD owners is appreciated.

I don't have a radar yet, but the sailors on Compuserve think highly of the Raytheon model 72, touting it's user friendliness and availability of spares over some of the other units. The Vigil radar which came with my CD36 when I bought the boat is no longer working. My son has the Raytheon SL 72 on his boat and it a MUCH better unit than my Raytheon 10XX. It also costs a lot less (about $1500 versus $2200).I don't have a radar yet, but the sailors on Compuserve think highly of the Raytheon model 72, touting it's user friendliness and availability of spares over some of the other units. The Vigil radar which came with my CD36 when I bought the boat is no longer working. I have a CD36 with the Raytheon 10XX radar. System works fine, although I believe the newer Model 72 has improvements. Also, my 10XX has a CRT display unit, which is very crisp, however due to its depth can be a challenge to mount if you want it flush mounted, as mine is in the CD36 instrument enclosure. I believe the Raytheon 72 has an LCD display, and thus will not present a flush mounting problem. I have had both Vigil and Furuno systems on my previous CD30. I think the Raytheon is a better choice.

Gene - I have a Raytheon radar model SL72 mounted on a stern pole aboard my CD330. I have found the system VERY useful over several of my recent trips. I was able to navigate around Fischer’s Island CT in zero visibility. I was able to monitor the channel markers on the screen and remain in the center of the channel, except when maneuvering to avoid oncoming vessels, all the while never being able to see the markers or shore. I have mounted the LCD monitor above the compass on my binnacle rail to assist navigation in such low visibility situations. The monitor is relatively thin and does not obstruct my view. The power consumption of the LCD monitor is less than the older CRT models. The system is easy to use and the onscreen display options of other information (speed, course, distance, depth, location) by way of the communication port is very convenient. The cost is moderate at approximately $1400 (plus dome mounting hardware if your current system is not compatible). I installed a second mounting bracket and connections at my navigation station (add another $350) to allow the monitor to be mounted at either location. The proximity alarm (fully adjustable) is useful at night and allows you to abandon the screen until the alarm is sounded. I tend to leave the tinkering with the electronic to others so the easy to use menu and fully automatic functions are a great feature. The system also allows for full user adjustments if you like.
