I would be grateful to hear from anyone with experiance with CD 30's,1977 vintage. Was the steel backing plate in the bow under the deck, above the chain locker originally glassed in?Any suggestions as to how to go about replacement? Also concerning the structural support for the maststep thats glassed in to the cabin roof, any idea what material was used here? was it wood, steel or something else? any info would be helpful. RFM

Re: CD30 2 Questions
Ron,
I have a 1977 CD30 ketch. All of the backing plates not in plain view are steel. The steel bow reinforcement is glassed in. It consists of a plate glassed to the underside of the deck, a plate glassed to the hull, and a plate welded between the two. My 1977 manual has a view of the Bowsprit System which includes the bow reinforcement. This view was dropped from later manuals. I will e-mail you a copy of that page.
Why replace? If it is a little rusty just clean and paint.

I have a CD 28 with the same backing plate in the bow, when I bought the boat the plate looked very rusty and I thought about replacing it.
But first I used a wire brush and found it wasn't as bad as I thought. After getting off as much rust as possible I sprayed it with something called Rust Destroyer which prevents rust and then finished the job with several coats of Rustoleum which was the same color as the inside of the anchor well. It was an easy job. Much easier than replacing the backing plate.

Re: CD30 2 Questions
Not only was the stem/deck plate on my boat totaly rusted but the chain plates as well (1977 CD 30 K). I cut out all the chain plates and replaced them with 3 layers of unidirectional glass. I then made one backing plate of s/s for each set of shrouds. This was done to some newer chain plate drawings from a manual off this sight. I am still deciding what the best way to do the stem plate will be. I also had to take out the steering brace and repair that. It originaly was welded to 3/4" pipe and glassed to the hull. The pipes were completly gone and the bracket was loose. I took it to a local welder who welded 3/4" solid round stock to the ends. I then coated the piece in epoxy and reinstalled it with glass straping as it was originally. This worked great and as the welder said the hollow pipe was the weak link. I guess CD figured we will cover everything with glass. Hey what could go wrong........
