Bronze winch base/support

Post by Jonathan Dodge »

A few months ago I purchased my first Cape Dory. She is a 1979 CD Typhoon. I'm in the process of a total make over.
Question # 1.Did the 79 come with teak winch supports (mine did)? My neighbors 81 has bronze winch supports.
Question #2. Who sells them, any used ones for sale?

Thanks

Jonathan,

Spartan Marine manufactured the bronze winch supports. Call 800-325-3287 for their catalog.

I've seen Cape Dories with wood winch supports or with the bronze ones. I think it depends on the model and when the boat was manufactured but I'm not sure.

My boat (1986 CD32, hull #3) has neither. My CD32 has wide coamings capped with 3/4 in. teak. The coamings are about 6 in. wide. You can actually sit on them and they're comfortable. The seatbacks are also teak. The winches are through-bolted through both the teak cap and the fiberglass beneath it and backed with large washers. She also has a T-cockpit unlike many of the older boats. So you'll see quite a few different CD cockpit and hardware configurations.

Jonathan,
I literally just came from a Marine Surplus / Salvage shop and they had a pair of unmistakeable CD winches (flat handle opening) on their brass supports (although supports painted white). Guy said $75. The store is non-descript joint in North Ft. Myers (FL) on Bus.Rt-41. I was just wandering; if you're interested, I could check further for you.
