July 2000 Rendezvous

Post by Leo and Ruth MacDonald »

July 2000 Rendezvous in New London, Ct. Have had a couple of calls for this upcoming event. Need feedback on who is interested, we are seaching for a Marina/Club to meet at......I (Ruth) will put into the plan for a caterer.....any suggestions/pro's or con's. the door is open. Although it seems a long way off, it really isn't. Once the big items are out of the way, the little stuff is easy, right Chris???

Anyone coming by car, plane or whatever....needs to consider bookings now. Since the month of July 2000 is OPS Sail Fest....here in Connecticut with the tall ships....now is the time to book. We have a B&B and there are many more in the area, plus hotels, motels.

Just a heads up folks.

I would be very interested in participating in the 2000 Rendezveus. My CD25 is moored in Niantic. Depending on how we do it I know Peter, a principal (not the Peter priciple) at Burr's in New London. We can also get space in Noank with new floating docks. At any rate feel free to get in touch with me and let me know how I can help.

We would be interested in participating depending when in July. We will be sailing up from the Annapolis area during the 4th of July week. After that we will be in Jamestown, RI. Well the boat will anyway. We plan to fly up on weekends. Maybe catch a long weekend every once in a while. Keep us posted......anything we can do to help from down here let me know.

Leo - I am very glad to see that the efforts by all involved in this years two events (including you and Ruth) has sparked others to take on this mighty task. I can say from experience that organizing an event is not an easy endeavor, but one that will pay you back with friendships and the exchange of sailing tails which you will keep with you for a very long time. I have compiled a list of several suggestions and ideas following the Onset Rendezvous. Please feel free to contact me if you would like a copy. If it is not overly presumptuous, may I suggest you call this the 2nd Annual New England CD Owners Rendezvous.

I would like to share one thought for your consideration of various locations for your event. Many of the folks in Onset this past year had expressed a desire to have spent more time visiting the other CDs. My thought for Onset 2000 (which will most likely not take place if your event in CT occurs) was to secure a VERY well protected location and try and have the boats raft together (either for the day Saturday of for the entire weekend). If you can find a facility with sufficient transient docks to accommodate the group then the same effect could be created with much less work.

Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance. I have been compiling a listing of New England CD owners from the responses I have received to my post about discounts and Boat/US. I can forward this listing to you or I would be happy to provide a massive e-mailing if you provide me with the appropriate text..

Marina Bay in Boston Harbor has the slip space, but a weekend there would end up costing a lot more than would moorings. Same for get-together space... would be harder to keep dinner costs below the moderate to higher prices restaurants available there.

How much is price an issue?

One of the major things discussed as the one hundred plus of us that gathered at Robinhood was what to do next. Most agreed that moving the gathering from one geographic location to another was an outstanding idea. We had folks in CD22s sailing down the Sheepscot River, folks in 25s coming from around the corner, etc., etc. Making the gathering available to all obviously means moving from place to place. Connecticut/Long Island Sound is a great idea.

A major reason why we had so many more boats/people at Robinhood than Chris had at Onset is that we didn't limit our notices to web/E-mail. We went the old fashioned route -- we used the USPS. Cape Dory owners are typical of the population at large -- only about 15% are active on the web. We have a mailing list of Cape Dory owners in New England and New York that is totally up to date. If you want, we can get you a list that includes other states. The problem is not the list, but the cost of the postage/printing involved.

If you'd like a copy of the list, or any other assistance, let us know.

Steve Files will be back from his summer in Maine after Labor Day. We're leaving from Robinhood for Nova Scotia next week and won't be returning until the first week in October. So, if you don't hear from either of us for a while, don't take it personally.

Joe
