Ted Hood designed a Cape Dory 30?

Never heard of this one, listed as a 1972. Anyone know any more info on the history of these boats. According to the listing only 6 were made.

They very well could have been built by Cape Dory, but were not actually Cape Dorys. A lot of builders at one time or another have built boats for other companies or private individuals. In which case the listing probably should read more like "Ted Hood 30, built by Cape Dory Yachts" as it was unlikely actually branded as a Cape Dory. Remember the model lists on this sites are not complete, the other day I was trying to find the specs for the CD26D, but realized they were not on here (only the 26 with the OB, which is a very different boat).

Very nice looking boat by the way, though that engine access looks even worse then the norm on sailboats.

That's one of six or seven 30' boats built by Cape Dory in the early 1970s. They are usually referred to as a "Cape 30." It's a Ted Hood design and looks more like a Bristol than a CD, with long overhangs and a small transom.

Hull number one hangs on a mooring near my boat and is in immaculate condition.

If you search the archives you'll find more on this interesting little detail in the Cape Dory story.

Yes, the boat does exist...

Below is "STARBUCK" a Cape Dory "Cape 30" Hull #1, designed by Ted Hood... custom built in 1972 for the then President of Cape Dory.

Starbuck is my father's boat, which sails out of Jubilee Yacht Club (Beverly, Mass.) and Nantucket. (Pics attached are from Nantucket.)

The boat is similar to a Hinckley Pilot 35; in fact, it has the same Hinckley cabin window design.

I had the pleasure of attending a Northeast Fleet rendezvous at Robinhood Marine Center in Maine in 2002. During that event, Andy Valvolotis, the former owner of Cape Dory Yachts and the current owner of Robinhood Yachts, gave a presentation about the history of Cape Dory Yachts. The boat in question was their first attempt at entering the "big boat" market, all of their previous designs being daysailers and dinghies. They actually purchased the mold from a defunct yacht builder and Ted Hood was the designer, but I cannot for the life of me remember which builder. But it was definitely the Ted Hood design pictured here as Andy had photos of their first 30-footer in his slideshow presentation. Anyway, this boat isn't what he really wanted so he approached Carl Alberg. Anyway, you are looking at a Cape Dory. It was not built for another company.

How about Naugus Boat Works, in Salem MA? I think they did the first Typhoons too.

Here is another little known early Cape Dory. Unlike the high end Cape 30, this model was marketed squarely at the lower end of the market.

Note the Cape Dory brown boot stripe!

Love the last picture, if the kid grimacing as he struggles to pull up the jib as the winch sits unused in front of him.

Your fathers boat is beautiful, and obviously well cared for and updated. I notice the boom goosneck is on a track with a downhaul, my last boat had that and I found it handy, my current CD does not though, I wonder if any CDs other then this early one had it. The long stern overhang on this design is lovely, it resembles Albergs other designs (even though its a Hood) much more then the CDs do, narrower, longer overhangs, etc.. The CDs short stern overhang doesnt give it the grace some of these older ones have, but I admit I love the extra stowage the short overhang provides.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the rare photo of the CD that John Ring shared with us. I recognized it immediately. This beautiful example of advanced design coupled with modern fluidity of lines was the Queen of the Boat Show several years ago

Many of you may not be familiar with this CD 23 FB B model. It isn't an Alberg design. It is a Goldberg design, Rube Goldberg. This gem happens to be Hull #1. BTW, it sports interior layout "A". Take note of the low wind resistant flying bridge.

In order to preserve it's exclusivity and maintain it's high resale value, among other things, it was decided to only build one and then stop production. This is truly a rare, one of a kind specimen???

John, again, thanks for sharing. If someone in the area could provide some measurements and other data, perhaps this rare bijou could be included in the CD archives.

Of course such examples are best preserved for antiquity but I'm impressed by the clean use of OB power so as to save the trouble of inboard mechanical operations and space requirements. The long bowsprit/passenger lookout/porch/gangplank also adds a nice salty touch. With commanding view from the flybridge I suspect navigating those crowded anchorages is a snap.

Very well designed ( and looks like economy of production did not compromise seaworthiness ! )

That trailer on a raft was our grandsons' favorite sight while leaving or returning to Coconut Grove Sailing Club through the north channel to Dinner Key in Miami. (Also note the leeboards on the boat in the background.)

Alas, that little box on a raft was blown away in Hurricane Wilma last year. That storm cleared out a bunch of such "vessels".
