Engine on CD28 volvo penta MD7A is overheating.
Replaced the thermostat - not the problem opens at correct
temperature approx 140 degrees F.
Flushed out engine with muriatic acid
going to check propeller next
and transmission
apparently only overheats (up to red mark approx 170 degrees F)
when transmission engaged.
Any help greatly appreciated.
PS. Have water flow from exhaust
thanks

engine overheating :: HELP please !!!

Re: engine overheating :: HELP please !!!
Is your engine fresh water cooled? If it is, your heat exchanger or fresh water pump and system, may be clogged or somehow misfunctioning. You could still see water from the exhaust since that is raw water, but you may not be getting much if any fresh water circulating through the engine.

Is it going to the red line and more? My MD7A will go nearly to the red line, then drop back down. I'm raw water cooled.

Re: engine overheating :: more info
Yes it is going to the red line. Just below the red line. For
info we put a thermometer on the guage. Just below the red line
is approx 165 degrees. The middle of the green is 140 degrees
which is when the thermostat will open so should never
cross middle of green.
The engine is raw water cooled no fresh water at all.

Re: engine overheating :: HELP please !!!
Neil - How about "underheating". My temp guage only goes into the white area before the green - what should I look for? I'm new to sailing (and motoring for that matter) and now want to make sure that this is not a problem. Any ideas on what to check or is this OK? Mine is an MD7A raw water cooled engine also. Thanks.>>Engine on CD28 volvo penta MD7A is overheating.<<
