Carolina's Fleet Dog Days trip to Little Washington

Hey gang,

I am more mobile every day and think I could negotiate a trip to Washington by car next weekend. I'd love to join the Fleet for dinner but would definitely need a bunk for the night. If anyone has a place for a beat up old sailor on their boat I'd love to drive over and enjoy a meal with all y'all.

There's a down side (as Ron and Scott will attest) and that's having to deal with some serious snoring at about 110db. If you have earplugs, they help (I wear them to keep from waking myself up). I can bring my own bedding, bug spray, portable fan and the makings for some Dark & Stormies.

Can't get on the water yet but can hardly wait to do so. Just sleeping on a boat would be pure pleasure!

At Ron Turner's suggestion, we are planning to be at the town docks `long about 3:00 PM. We'll have a vehicle, should anyone need it. You can recognize us as couple squinting into the distance watching for new arrivals

Hey Randy!

Been a while since I've been active here (or on the water for that matter). Getting better every day and am realizing that "pain free" is a state I haven't been in for these last few decades.

I plan to go to the Fleet thing in Washington and scarf up a few Dark & Stormies, have a nice meal somewhere, and enjoy the company of the CD'ers who make it.

Hope you and Bev are doing fine.

Last boat is home, I assume that was me on LUVIT.
The cruise went more or less as planned. The exception was the over abundance of wind on the nose leaving Washigton. The Pamlico River has a loong fetch. Luvit pulled off the river to overnight in Bath. Quiet and beautiful water there. Historic houses, oldest (1734) standing and still in use church and a FREE State dock. We were back on the river before sunrise and had a pleasant and uneventful but still hot trip home. Hope there were some photos taken that get shared.

More stories to tell, but no further groundings. Oh, there was a close encounter, but I caught it soon enough to motor slowly back into the good water.

We ran from Washington to Broad Creek on Sunday and then were away at 7 to reach the marina in Beaufort by noon. I then exhausted myself trying to pick up, clean the mud off the chain and rode and out of the locker. I think my crew managed to fill the holding tank with seawater, so I am going to padlock the intake seacock in addition to the output, which is already padlocked. I wonder if I can remove the handle from the wet/dry control.

I figured out the autopilot again, so the trip down the Pamlico and up the Neuse was pretty much a cookbook affair. I still want to move the control to the helm along with the chartplotter and the depth sounder. I also would like to be able to see the engine panel. Having someone read it to you is just not the same even if you have confidence that they CAN read the panel. Even I got confused once between water temp and oil pressure. Guess a couple of white tabs on "Normal" readings might be a good idea.

Why is it that designers think engine panels on sailboats don't need to be seen while panels on power boats do? Is it a basic disrespect for engines or a total lack of knowledge about how most sailboats get from point A to B in a coastal situation such as ours?

Glad we all made it home safely. Got to go check out the hurricane situation.

Thanks to Judith there were pictures taken and a trip to the local marine store.
This a picture of Mr and Mrs LUVIT. Note the denim covered brick that until this trip was the throttle creep control device. I saw a cable clamp on someone elses boat, tried it and it works great. Anyone need a brick?

No, I don't think that is my Grady in the background, but it is a more recent version. Great photo from that tiny camera that Warren was carrying.

I have one of those ground clamps on Parfait's throttle cable, but I am afraid that I'll get it too tight; is the cable sufficiently resilient to bounce back from an overtightening?. My kludge with a line to the pedestal works, but I am thinking that a bit of Velcro strapping might look better. Why didn't Edson put a throttle brake into the pedestal design as well as the helm brake? Surely cost wasn't a concern.
