Wilmington, NC - Marina

Post by GeorgeV »

I am looking for recommendations for a marina within 50 miles of Wilmington which has good dry storage and will allow someone to work on their own boat.

A friend of mine has a 45 footer and is looking to do some extensive work on the boat and is in search of a good Marina to do it at.

Any suggestions?

Wilmington Yard

I have no personal knowledge of yards near Wilmington, but the NC boating guide list most coastal facilities and can be read on line at:
http://www.ncdot.org/it/gis/DataDistrib ... tingGuide/

You can also order a copy at:

Keep on sailing,

My experience is on the ICW. Masonboro and Southport have yards but as for DIY I don't know.

NOT Anchors Away Boatyard (marker 90)

Post by chase »

They tried to bill me for a bottom job when I did my bottom after closing on Anne Freeman (she was already there on the hard). I was unclear about the scope of work allowed and those pilfering fools tried to take advantage of that. Chris Bubin, who is the resident painter, actually watched me tape my line and paint the boat without saying a word. He then lobbied the boatyard operators to bill me for the job that I did. I have compassion for the poor man who really needs to be more careful and wear better respirators.

I believe there is one at Sneeds Ferry and I think Masonboro allows DIY.

Short of that, there are boatyards on the Neuse and Pamlico that are more affordable and actually appreciate business from people who might work on their own boats.

Anchors Away left a bad taste in my mouth and I hope none of you will ever need their services. They are crooks.

As of January 2006, Masonboro Boat Yard has closed and all equipment has been removed--all part of an expansion of the marina. Nearby yards are Bennett Brothers, http://bbyachts.com/ and Wilmington Marine Center, http://www.wilmingtonmarine.com/Default.htm, both on the Cape Fear River near downtown Wilmington. I don't know what these yards allow owners to do on their boats.

Keith,

Thanks for the Masonboro news. I have depended on them in the past on deliveries going that way.

Anchor Marina in Little River, SC is a full service yard that allows owners to work on their own boats. If you have a slip rented there they don't charge you for time on the hard. The water tends to be shallow but they did some dredging this summer. They are pretty far from Wilmington, but I think within the specified 50 miles.
